z/OSMF Client Experiences

Following the end of the z/OS 3.1 Release Beta Program, numerous participants shared their thoughts and experiences testing out the z/OSMF features available on z/OS 3.1. Hear what our users had to say:

z/OSMF Installation

  • “It was our first installation using z/OSMF (we were on z/OS 2.4). The installation was very smooth and quick to be done with z/OS 3.1 Upgrade Workflow. We found it very similar to the Custom Pack, only now with the graphical interface of z/OSMF.” – Caixa Econômica Federal
  •       “We did the z/OS 3.1 install without any problems with the Server Pack, everything was fine.”  Caixa Econômica Federal
  •       “It was our first installation using z/OSMF, it was very smooth, similar to Custom Pack in a graphical environment.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •      “z/OS 3.1 installation was easy going.”  Dataport
  •      “We had a very smooth installation process of z/OS 3.1 compared to the last release, which was probably also due to getting used of the z/OSMF process.” CTIE
  •      “We are very satisfied with the ease of use of the new z/OS 3.1 Upgrade Workflow and Portable Software Instance. The installation process got easier and smoother with this upgrade.” CTIE
  •      “No problems during the z/OS 3.1 installation using z/OSMF workflow.” Atruvia AG
  •      “Very smooth installation and operation of z/OS 3.1.” Atruvia AG
  •      "z/OS 3.1 was a smooth version change! Feels like a refresh.” Atruvia AG
  •       “The installation of z/OS 3.1 was done by our young talent with my support. He has been working on the mainframes for 6 months. He was able to install z/OS 3.1 via z/OSMF and he was able to do the migration from z/OS 2.5 to z/OS 3.1.” – Abraxas Informatik AG
  •      "The installation of z/OS 3.1 was a straightforward process, done for the first time by a staff member inexperienced with installing z/OS without major issue.” - Australian Government Department
  •       "Relatively smooth experience for staff member doing their first z/OS install. Shop and z/OSMF are intuitive to use.” - Australian Government Department
  •      “Although we still need adaptations to this new installation via z/OSMF, we noticed that this process had a good evolution from installing z/OS 2.5 to z/OS 3.1…” - Banco do Brasil S.A.
  •       “I had been putting off installing anything using z/OSMF. I guess it was a case of "old habits die hard", when I’ve used the dialog to install z/OS so many times before. And of course all the posts that various people put in IBM-MAIN about the process don't help a bit.  z/OS 3.1 was the first time I installed anything, let alone a ServerPac for a new z/OS release.  In the end, I was pleasantly surprised to find the whole process is no worse than using the dialog.  So the fear that I had all along was really unwarranted.” – ANZ Bank
  • "Installing z/OS using z/OSMF is definitely easier to use than installing via CustomPac, even for those who have already installed multiple versions of z/OS in black screen.” - Banco do Brasil S.A.

z/OSMF Desktop

  •      “The z/OSMF Desktop facilitates a lot the download/upload of data sets and files between the mainframe and the desktop, and between data sets and files, and can be used instead of the DOS prompt and other tools such as Filezilla for this function- it helps a lot in comparing data sets and files too. We like z/OSMF Desktop a lot, we need to promote this functionality to the team.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •        We also tested the z/OSMF Desktop file, which is a good tool for those unfamiliar with the TS3270 screen to perform copy, rename, delete, compare data sets and Unix files.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •       “The z/OSMF desktop enhancements are a great feature and can really help with daily activities.” - Banco de Brasília (BRB)

 ‘General’ z/OSMF

  •       “The new z/OS 3.1 functions in z/OSMF have been praised by our testers.” – Abraxas Informatik AG
  •      “I am looking forward the testing the AI component of z/OS 3.1. With these new features, together with the changes/enhancements made to z/OSMF, and zCX, z/OS is really ready to be looked after and carry on the legacy of Mainframe by the next generation of system programmers.” - ANZ Bank
  •      “Ensuring the compatibility of each new version of z/OS with customer applications is still the biggest reason we can seamlessly migrate to each of these new versions. Likewise, documentation and technical support, whether local or remote, are essential. Scheduled maintenance, such as Recommended service upgrade (RSU), reduces the risk of errors in the environment. SDSF, like z/OSMF, brought many facilities to operators' daily lives. And of course, z/OSMF is improving every day and attracting more and more attention from systems programmers.” - Banco do Brasil S.A.
  •       “z/OSMF came to make life easier for new systems programmers. Now we need to take a step further and have these step be translated into artificial intelligence. What’s better than giving systems programmers friendly tools is doing the work for them, especially in tasks that require immediate action, in addition to predicting problems and suggesting improvements. This way, systems programmers could focus their efforts on solving business problems using mainframe technology.” - Banco do Brasil S.A.

z/OSMF Sysplex Management/ CFRM Policy Editor

  •       “With the CFRM Policy Editor, we can benefit by copying multiple structures, and with the integration of CF Sizing we will benefit in calculating the size of structures when migrating CF Level, and also in calculating structures by type/group of products (DB2, JES2 , CICS, etc…). The functionality of comparing two CFRM policies also helps a lot. We like the integration of CF Sizing with the policy editor.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •        “Re: the CFRM Policiy Editor, we liked the CF Sizer integration and CF Sizer recognition of the CF Level, it will help us in calculating the size of structures when CF Level migration occurs. We also evaluated the WLM Policy Advisor, can be useful for a quick WLM policy evaluation. We also tested the z/OSMF Desktop file, which is a good tool for those unfamiliar with the TS3270 screen to perform copy, rename, delete, compare data sets and Unix files.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •        “We also tested the CFRM Policiy Editor, we liked the CF Sizer integration and CF Sizer recognition of the CF Level, it will help us in calculating the size of structures when CF Level migration occurs.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •        “The CFSizer function could evaluate the policy and inform whether all structures are at the minimum size necessary to migrate to a new informed CF Level.” - Banco do Brasil S.A.

z/OSMF WLM Policy Advisor

  •      “Since WLM Policy Advisor displays the main characteristics of each service class, it’s easy and intuitive to navigate.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •       “We also evaluated the WLM Policy Advisor, can be useful for a quick WLM policy evaluation.” Caixa Econômica Federal
  •      “With a number of new features in z/OS 3.1 based on AI (eg, AI initiators, WLM Policy Advisor), and the work that has gone into z/OSMF, z/OS 3.1 will make the job for the next/new generation system programmers and system tuners much easier…” - ANZ Bank
  •       “z/OSMF WLM Policy Advisor and SDSF Module Fetch Monitor are both good features.” - Banco do Brasil S.A.

z/OS Change Tracker plugin

  •       “The z/OS Change Tracker z/OSMF plugin was easy to import plugin and configuration setup, it was easy to use in order to protect dataset or modify/remove protection (lock, notify), also, it was easy to handle dataset members, execute backups and recover its versions. It was easy to use z/OSMF Change Tracker and can be helpful for strategic datasets by monitoring it, even locking it, and maintaining an Audit log. Also good is to have versions of backup for members.”– Caixa Econômica Federal
