Linux on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE use the s390x hardware architecture to run various Linux distributions, including SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and Ubuntu. Tens of thousands of software packages are tested and distributed through these projects, and various community distributions.

But for some applications, a team at IBM pays special attention to make sure they compile and run as expected (or better!). This work is done as a collaboration between the open source projects themselves and the team at IBM, with as many changes as possible making it upstream. This effort is an on-going collaboration with every release of the software needing to be validated.

What's beyond this report? In addition to the distributions, there are thousands of open source projects who have added s390x to their build pipelines and produce binaries and containers. This month, I want to highlight a few projects. The first is the Dynatrace distribution of the OpenTelemetry Collector which added s390x to their ci and began releasing binaries with their v0.22.0 release. The lttng project also added s390x to their ci which you can now see in their dashboard at ci.lttng.org. Finally, StreamsHub Console for Apache Kafka mentioned in their v0.6.2 release that ci had been added for the platform.
