AlmaLinux 8.6 now with support for IBM zSystems and LinuxONE

Back in May, we learned that AlmaLinux 9 was released, with support for IBM zSystems and LinuxONE.

AlmaLinux has two versions at the time of writing, 9.0 and 8.6. The zSystems and LinuxONE support was only for 9.0 until recently due to the way that that AlmaLinux is built. According to the announcement blog post on October 7th, "In general, we build an AlmaLinux release by consuming upstream sources from the CentOS git and pulling those into our AlmaLinux Git Server which are then built using by the AlmaLinux Build System. While the CentOS project built releases for a few architectures, CentOS 8 was never built for IBM Z!"

The blog post goes on to dive into the why and how this was accomplished in collaboration with Sine Nomine Associates, and concludes by sharing other ways to get involved: This Distro Should Not Exist - AlmaLinux 8.6 for IBM Z
