Linux on IBM Z and LinuxONE - Group home

Catch IBM Z Day 2021 Linux-focused Replays!

IBM Z Day took place on September 15th, and for folks interested in Linux on IBM Z and LinuxONE, there were a number of sessions in the Open Z track that may be of interest!

You can still register and watch replays, so I'm here to recommend checking out the following related directly to the latest developments in the major Linux distributions on Z:

  • "OpenShift + RHEL" (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift) on IBM Z with Global Solutions Architect Murthy Garimella of Red Hat
  • "What's new in SUSE Enterprise IBM Z and LinuxONE" with Solutions Architect Mike Friesenegger of SUSE
  • "What’s new in Ubuntu for IBM Z and LinuxONE" with Tech Lead Frank Heimes of Canonical Ltd.

Digging into the schedule a bit more, it's worth checking out "Containers on IBM Z – The Open Source Way" presented by Sarah Julia Kriesch, a DevOps Specialist at Accenture and contributor to the openSUSE distribution, which recently had it's first release of the Leap distribution for IBM Z and LinuxONE. In a session that I presented with Divya Goswami titled "Looking for Open Source Software on Z? Meet the Software Discovery Tool!" we talked about the improvements to the tool to search a number of distributions.

IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Virtual Servers run on LinuxONE, and Client Success Architect Sandeep Batta was joined by Alberto Blumschein of Drumwave to talk about how they're using the platform in "AI/Machine Learning on IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Virtual Servers – a LinuxONE service". Neale Ferguson, Principal Engineer at Sine Nomine Associates, presented on the progress being made with ".NET on Z", and to conclude the day, Montana Mendy of Travis CI gave a presentation on "Testing open source apps with Travis CI" where he demonstrated how easy it is to add s390x testing to your open source project.

Open Z was just one of the tracks for this event, so I highly recommend browsing the whole schedule and catching up on any sessions that sparked your interest. I'm still working my way through ones that I couldn't make due to attending other talks!
