SUSE to Bring Rancher Labs Technology to IBM Z and LinuxONE

Back in December, SUSE completed their acquisition of the enterprise Kuberenetes company, Rancher Labs. Rancher brings multiple Kubernetes products and open source projects into the SUSE portfolio, and Michael Friesenegger writes in a recent blog post about what that means for support of IBM Z and LinuxONE, Bringing Rancher Value to IBM Z and LinuxONE.

"Many SLES customers and IBM Partners that work with IBM Systems have reached out asking for a Kubernetes management solution from SUSE. We have heard repeatedly that bringing Rancher products to IBM Systems will provide customer choice. We also heard organizations are looking at containers as the technology that will make IBM z/OS as well as Linux on IBM Z and LinuxONE an important part of their hybrid cloud deployment strategy."

His announcement confirms that the following Rancher projects are being worked on for IBM Z and LinuxONE:

  • RKE2 (Rancher Kubernetes Engine)
  • Rancher (Multi-cluster management)
  • Longhorn (Cloud-native storage platform)

This is the first in a series of exciting announcements for SUSE and their Kubernetes support for SLES, and one I'm really thrilled to see.
