The 2017 Master the Mainframe contest registration is now open and competition has started. Unlike years’ past where there were regional contests, this year it’s a global event, with six regions—North America, Latin America, South Asia, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, and Europe—participating.
AngelHack is running this years contest, sponsored by the IBM Z Academic Initiative program, runs through Dec. 31 at midnight Eastern time, offering students a fun and accessible introduction to the platform—and no experience is necessary. The IBM team that designs the contest—with input from industry and academia—seeks to provide a learning experience for students. Participants not only gain hands-on, marketable skills but also a better understanding of how mainframes are used in the real world.
“By partnering with AngelHack, we are hoping to get a much broader reach of students than ever before,” says Troy Crutcher, IBM Z Academic Initiative and Master the Mainframe program manager. “Students will win prizes while gaining unique skills will land them in a career in Fortune 500 companies around the world.”
Prizes will be awarded at each level. The first 3,000 participants who finish part 1 with 100 percent correct results will be eligible to have their names in a drawing for 1 of 750 gift cards. The first 200 people to successfully complete Part 2 will win a $100 gift card. For Part 3, the top two finishers from each region will have the opportunity to visit the IBM office in their region and meet with key executives and recruiters on their project. The top three global winners will receive an HTC Vive (worth $799 U.S. dollars).
