What is VOLSER?

If you work with mainframe computing, you're likely familiar with the term "VOLSER." Short for Volume Serial Number, it's a unique identifier assigned to storage volumes like disks and tapes. Having a VOLSER helps to manage and track storage media within the system, allowing for efficient storage management and access control.

Creating a VOLSER is typically done using software tools or commands provided by the mainframe operating system. On IBM's z/OS operating system, one of the most widely used mainframe operating systems, the process involves defining the volume, allocating it within the storage management system, assigning a VOLSER, and verifying and activating the volume for use.

It's important to note that creating a VOLSER typically requires appropriate permissions and authorization within the mainframe environment. Additionally, the exact commands or procedures may vary based on your organization's specific setup and configurations. Make sure to consult the documentation or system administrators for detailed instructions tailored to your environment.

VOLSER Naming Conventions

The volume serial number of a volume must be 6 characters of upper case letters or numbers. The volser can also have @ , # , and $ .
