Curious how IMS 15.3 performs on the new IBM z16 platform?

By Amanda Stephens and Justin Soe

Curious how the IBM® z16™ platform running IMS™ 15.3 workloads stands up against its predecessor, IBM z15®?

Well, good news! The IMS Performance Evaluation Team based out of the IBM Silicon Valley Lab, just published their findings in the IMS Performance Evaluation on IBM z16 white paper.

What’s so great about IBM z16?

IBM z16, announced in April 2022, is IBM’s next-generation mainframe. Designed with an IBM Telum™ processor at its core and an integrated on-chip Artificial Intelligence (AI) accelerator, it provides the high performance, resiliency, scalability, and security that’s needed to support mission critical workloads in an era of digital transformation.

Combining the latest technology offered on IBM z16 with the performance of IMS 15.3, provides the foundation for an agile infrastructure that speaks to both the performance businesses rely on and the security they count on to meet the constant changes in business needs.

Now, for the fun part! What does the data say?  Here's a sneak peek.

The performance evaluations demonstrated that IBM z16 running IMS 15.3 workloads provided improved CPU efficiency and performance (depending on the environment and configuration) when compared to IBM z15.

The results of the IBM internal testing, that was done in a controlled laboratory environment, also demonstrated improvements in the Internal Transaction Rate (ITR) ranging from 4% to 21% depending on the workload.

The summary of ITR improvements in IBM z16 from IBM z15 is shown below in Figure 1.

Based on the testing, IBM z16 and IMS continue to provide excellent performance benefits that our customers have come to expect.
