Any well written code should have some kind of tracing facility to allow an "inside" view to its working so that when problems happen the issue can be looked into while its happening. You must have come across OS tracing tools such as dTrace ( Solaris ), systemTap ( Linux ), probeVue ( AIX )., tcpdump ( Linux ) , iptrace ( AIX ) for network tracing. On similar lines, DB2's tracing facility is coded so that it can provide a view of the inner working of the engine and it can be used to find bottlenecks within the engine
