I tried " a mixed way" , I did a new installation of the dmc on my windows server that hosts the core of the DMC but I left the old repository.
DMC tool has easily recognized the presence of this repository and everything works fine.

It is really up to you.
If you select a new install, you will need to make changes on all properties file again, such as JVM configuration for example, or any other changes made on the environment since the last installation.
DMC supports migration of the environment:

Here are some hints:
1. Always make sure that you take a backup of the repository database before the migration. If something happens, you can still go back to the previous version
2. Use the same user that starts DMC for the installation and to run the setup script. I have seen some installations where customers forget about that, and use root user for the install. Once you use root for the install, you must use root to start DMC after that.
