  • 1.  Informix on a Windows Server

    My boss asked me to research whether using Informix on a Windows Server is a good idea or not. Up until now we have used it with AIX and Linux machines. If anyone has an insight to share, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    Stick with AIX on Power or Linux on Intel. Either will be more stable and perform better than Windows and be simpler to manage. I have many clients and none are running on Windows. I have interacted with hundreds of organizations using Informix and I can only remember two that are using Informix on Windows.

    We have been using Informix on Windows since the late 90's.
    It has definitely got better with time and the installer has improved no end.
    However, being Windows, most monthly 'windows updates' require a server reboot!  - not the best scheme.
    Also, at times when moving to later versions we find problems that make you wonder how much real world testing was undertaken on windows.
    We only use it very basically, no replication currently for HA or similar. We tried to use the timeseries datablade for a while but had no end of issues so abandoned it in the end. So like Art said it probably best to stick with what you have and know.

    Hi John,

    Informix is running fast, stable, and managed by default on Windows Server for many years. Many clients in Europe use Informix xx.xx Workgroup Edition under Windows in every branch, every size.

    It's up to you, how it fits in your IT Enterprise Environment, finally.
