  • 1.  Upgrade Express Edition 12.10.FC5 to 12.10.FC15W1

    Posted Tue March 08, 2022 08:06 PM

    Hello Informix Forum,

I want ot upgrade our Express Edition from 12.10.FC5 to 12.10.FC15W1, as we occasionally get the server crashing, usually with a Linux "mutex" error (curiously a few hours after executing an ALTER TABLE command).

On the IBM Fix Central it has fix packs for each successive version, e.g. a pack for FC6, another for FC7, and so on up to IIF.12.10.FC15.linux-x86_64 .

These are said to be for the "Enterprise Edition", and we use the Express Edition.   Are they still applicable to our Express Edidtion?

Do I need to install each successive fix pack, or can I just install the most recent for FC15?  And if I have to install all fix packs, would it be better to just download and run the 12.10.FC15 installer?

Is the procedure for applying a fix pack the same as doing a regular Linux install:  untar the tar file contents in $INFORMIXDIR, then run ids_install ?  (having previously backed up the directory and data naturally)

    Many thanks,

    Gary

You should be able to jump directly, no major gotchas spring to mind that are not in the migration guide

    Gary:

No, you cannot use the Enterprise Edition fixpack. In v12.10 Express Edition and Enterprise Edition are different executables. If you install one of those you will be out of compliance with your licenses. If the Express fixpack is not on Fix Central then just go to your Passport Advantage account and get the full 12.10FC15W1 package from there. Install that into a new directory, copy the ONCONFIG file and sqlhosts file (if that file is kept in INFORMIXDIR/etc) into the new INFORMIXDIR/etc, shutdown the engine, repoint the symbolic link you are using for INFORMIXDIR to the new installation (if you are not using a link, you should be is simplifies upgrades - relinking means you don't have to change any scripts, environment 'dot' files, or even your running PATH for the upgrade), then restart the instance with the new oninit.

If the latest v12.10 isn't already in your PA account, contact IBM to get it put there for you.

Thanks for the information Art.  I think it best to do a clean install.

As far as the data goes, we are using cooked dbspace files.  So in addition to copying some of the configuration files, can I simply copy the dbspace files into the new installation (assuming the old server is offline so the files are not in use)?  When the new server starts will it automatically convert the data for the newer version?

Yes of course you can copy chunk files from stoped server to the same location to the new server (chunk file names must be same unless you are doing restore with renaming chunks) - you can even do dd command for raw chunks and copy them to the "same place" on new server.

And yes, starting new version will trigger convert.

    Gary:

There is no need to copy the data anywhere. Just bring up the instance using the new oninit executable with a copy of the original ONCONFIG file and POOF! all will be well. Any internal structures that need to be rebuilt will be handled automatically be the oninit when it realizes that the ROOTDB was last opened by an earlier release. Informix upgrades are automatic and painless unless you are upgrading several major versions (like from v10.00 to v14.10 for example).
