Sorry but I personnally will never help for such a migration.

I cannot help someone to migrate to a worse solution

    Srinivasarao:

Welcome to the Informix Community! So sad that you are migrating away!

Depending on the specific data types in your current schema this may either be trivial or very hard. Oracle does not have direct support for some Informix types. If your Informix schema includes some of those, then you may have to massage the data quite a bit. We can help if you run into anything that isn't obvious.

IBM used to have a White Paper on migrating the other way, from Oracle to Informix. That might have some hints for you about what you will have to do if you can find a copy.

    Oh, forgot two things:

1 - You may find that Oracle does not perform as well as Informix for many workloads.
2 - Might we know why your are migrating away from Informix?

Henri: you said in a nice way what I told in a bad and almost rude way: I see no advantage in spending (lots of) time and money to migrate from informix to Oxxcle, to have at the end a more costly solution in terms of hardware and staffing, all on a product that is probably not as fast, flexible and robust as Informix, and a good number of years behind in terms of technology.

And migrating to another database is always a big risk, mainly because who made the decision won't assume any responsibility when problems and delays arise, the migration team will immediately designated as responsible for the trouble  :-)

But hey, cowboys don't fear anything as long as they are far away in case of problems :-)

    Hi Guys,

Thank you one and all for your reply.
Hope guys are having different mind here from my question. Just i am curious to get some details about informix database but no luck here.
Kindly note,  we need multiple db's now to manage data. Either by type of data,  cost of licence,  need for archive data to store etc...  And many..
No need to stick into one db.
Once again thank you so much for your support!!

    Thanks,
    Srinivas

    @ Srinivasarao K

Please do not take this personally. Informix DBA's is a worldwide and very united family.

As anyone in any family, we hate seeing a member of our family dying or going away.

Some customers leave Informix just because they ignore its real value, which is very sad, because quitting Informix is like being used to ride a safe and fast car and having to ride a bicycle in a turmoil of angry truck drivers in a highway around Los Angeles: you were used to easy life and now you must deal with dangerous mess. Informix DBA's a generally happy and unstressed people as per compared to other DBMS' DBAs. That's the raw reality.

Imagine customers even ignore they ran their main website on top of Informix, for years!

But it's OK. We all in this group have seen a lot of similar migration and in too many cases, seen disappointment, budget override and timeline override at the end.

Anyone who has really used Informix and compared with others will tell you the same

No war, no nothing, just providing wise advice

And BTW, in this group, you just have access to all the Informix gurus on this planet.

    Cheers

    Srinivas:

So, I think that we all got off on the wrong foot or two. Let's start again. I think that it would be good if you asked specific questions and we will give you answers. You asked how to migrate your Informix data to Oracle. Obviously few of us, as Informix fanatics, have done that, but I at least did give you some sense that it may be trivial or may be hard depending on how dependent on Informix specific data your database is.

Beyond that, what do you need/want to know? Informix is a very easy to use RDBMS and the latest releases (currently v14.10FC4W1) is highly extensible and very capable. Informix is probably the fastest OLTP engine on the planet. It is also very easy to administer (Walmart maintains over 20,000 Informix instances with fewer than 10 DBAs, The Home Depot is similar).

SO, ask specific questions and we will gladly answer.

    This link: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/B10501_01/win.920/a97251/ch2.htm#:~:text=Informix%20Dynamic%20Server%20users%20are,authentication%2C%20usually%20through%20the%20database.

is an Oracle doc page that describes some differences between the two systems. Obviously it is Oracle centric and pushes Oracle's way of doing things as superior. As obviously we in the Informix community have different opinions. However, I provide the link because at the bottom of the page is a list of terms in both and how they correspond.

Here also is a link to the IBM Redbook that I mentioned (OK it's not a white paper) about migrating from Oracle to Informix:

Here are the most important Informix administration tools listed. All of these tools will report their usage if you run them with -? and most if run with no arguments as well:
    • oninit - the engine process and what you run to start up an Informix instance.
    • onmode - the Informix instance management utility. onmode -ky to shutdown the instance for example.
    • onstat - Informix server status reporting tool with hundreds of reporting options.
    • oncheck - check or report on the internal consistency of an Informix instance's data structures on disk. Capable of some repairs as well.
    • ontape - the simpler of Informix's two archiving utilities.
    • onbar - a more powerful archiving utility that works with any XBSA compliant backup system. A simple one, PSA, is supplied with Informix and configured by default.
    • archecker - archive validation tool. Also capable of partially restoring data from an archive.
    • dbaccess - Informix query tool.
    • dbschema - Informix schema reporting tool.
    • cdr - replication management tool for Enterprise Replication and related technologies like distributed/sharded tables, post commit triggers, etc.
Another resource you can avail yourself of is training. Informix basic DBA training and Advanced Informix Performance Tuning training is available from Advanced DataTools Corp. an IBM partner (full disclosure: I co-teach the Advanced course with Lester Knutsen, ADTC's President). www.advancedatatools.com

The Informix online documentation is at this link:

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Srini,

Just from my personal experience. I was also an Oracle guy, but when I started working on Informix, my love for Informix started increasing. And today I never think of going back to oracle.

I find commands are very user friendly and very short with all the details you are looking for in one command by just remembering the flags...

There are many differences I have seen in Informix as compare to oracle which are very cool.
Later I migrated many customers from Oracle to Informix and even they all were happy till date. They have seen performance improvement by 20-30% in Informix.

Believe me, you will regret if you have moved to oracle. Don't think I am just trying to stop one user. But as per my exp I have seen the difference.

So it would be good if you start learning Informix. You can go for some training like Informix sysadmin and DBA and see the amount you can save for your company.
