The management at my organization has decided that Informix is not to be in our future.  We will be migrating from Informix on Solaris on SPARC to MS SQL Server on Windows.

We will likely be using a contractor for this operation, but I am also investigating other options.

I feel like a traitor, but I am asking anyway.  There appear to be some migration tools which promise good things.  Some that I have stumbled upon by consulting my good friend, Dr. Google, are offerings from Ispirer.com, SQLines.com, and dbsofts.com.  No doubt, there are others.  I'm doing this in my spare time, just to "trust but verify" so to speak.  One of the primary drivers of this effort maintains that it is pointless to even evaluate software migration tools because there are none that work, so it is a waste of time to evaluate any.

Might anyone know if that really is the case?

Are there any migration tools that actually work, to migrate "the whole ball of wax" (tables, spls, etc.) from Informix to MS SQL Server?

    Thank you (sadly).

    Hi David,

I am sorry to hear this, but I know that it has been on the cards for you guys for a while.

We have a customer wo had used sqlines to pull over schemas and data to a SQL Server database on Windows, and it's been quite successful.  I don't know how they get a consistent snapshot of an active database, but it's used for replication so perhaps that cleans up any discrepancies.  Sqlines says that it performs SPL migration, but I have no experience with that.
