    Greetings,

ZZzzZap! "Er' please take me to your leader"?

I hope the following would not be too much to ask for as I am real nervous about asking such questions to such a technical crew, but sadly I am going to have to.
So, I installed Informix on Ubuntu 20.04 (Pop_OS) but have been completely stumped as to how to proceed. I have been looking at the docs but no easy (Yes I wish - )..
    > sudo informix start or > sudo informix- whatever commands to log into the server (- that and a .deb package that I could just gdebi install maybe even better an ubuntu repo!?) Anyhow silly jesting aside (I am real serious) my question is simple: How do I log into the newly installed environment to be able to start process?

    Thank you!

    Eugene:

Watch Lester's WebCast on configuring a new server. If you asked the installer to create a server instance for you, then you can skip to starting that instance up:

    oninit -vw

If that does not work immediately (for example if oninit is <not found>) then make sure that the INFORMIXDIR and INFORMIXSERVER environment variables are set and that $INFORMIXDIR/bin is included in your PATH and try again.

The main tools for examining your server are:
    • onstat - reporting tool to see the status of the server, client sessions, etc. Run onstat with -? to see usage.
    • dbaccess - main query tool. This opens in menu mode by default. The menus are self explanatory and include options to list tables and their columns, indexes, constraints, etc.
    • dbschema - report the SQL DDL needed to recreate your database schema.
The server starts up with three built-in databases:
    • sysmaster - The System Management Interface (SMI) database. This contains pseudo tables which are actually windows into shared memory and disk that let you see what's happening inside your server. Most of the information available here is reported by onstat options.
    • sysadmin - An administration database that owns the SQL API functions that are the other way (in addition to the on* utilities in $INFORMIXDIR/bin) to manage and modify your server.
    • sysusers - Used by the server to manage and authenticate some users (Informix mostly uses the OS to authenticate users, but you can optionally create users that exist only in Informix and not in the OS).
You can create a demo database by running one of the scripts in $INFORMIXDIR/bin named *demo*.sh

If you have not had the installer configure a server for you, here is the link to the main online documentation page that provides an overview of how to set up a server instance:

    Hello Eugene,
For learning purposes, I think it's a good idea to choose the option to create an instance before starting the installation.
Then, when the installation is complete, a script that sets related environment variables (INFORMIXDIR, INFORMIXSERVER, etc.) is also created.

    Hi Eugene,

To me, it seems like you haven't selected the option to create an instance while doing the installation. If you do so, you will get environment file path in the end.
Using that env file you can log on to Informix server and see that is online (using onstat - )with all the dbspaces and chunks created automatically (onstat -d) for you.

You just have to use Informix utilities to use the database and they are very easy to use.
Best is to go to IBM Informix Knowledge center and search for the utilities and being very basic command is onstat-- (for help), onmode--(help) etc..
