  • 1.  Trying to recover a corrupt IDS 7.31 backup with ontape

    Hi Friends,

I have been submitted a case for data recover at a customer's, running 7.31 UC3 on AIX 4.4.3(....!) who realized a few days ago about disk/chunks corruptions while he was trying to restore his oldest 'usable' backup done with ontape.

ontape -r does not work because the backup is also corrupt at some places.

I am considering using archecker to recover table by table, but, looking in the What's new history, the tables recover option looks to be released in V10.00xC10.

I don't have access to the system yet, so I can't test the option.

Does the archecker -t -X exists in that version ?

any other idea to recover part of the backup ? dd'ing pages ? other?
Not sure yet if the instance can start or not

Yes, checking backups is important .....

The restore option to archecker was definitely not available before v10.00.

According to JM3 the current archeckers "should" be able to extract data from older archives as well as from dbspace chunks directly. Never actually tried either myself.

    Hi Art,

this is definately what I will check. I have no access to the system yet, thus my question. I am not sure at all they have a recent oncheck -pe output. They have just forgotten that this instance was existing, although it serves a medical lab in a huge public hospital...

Not sure also if they have already over-written the chunks with the restore attempts.
    Thanks and more news later
    Eric

As archecker is a stand-alone utility the worse case is it will not work. It won’t hurt to try it.

The 14.10 cdr binary runs happily on 11.7 install for example

I will duely report on the result

    Thanks PW

It's been a long time since I did anything with 7.31 but one thing I do clearly remember is trying and failing to recover a "corrupt" ontape backup using 7.31.UC8. It was fine when the restore target was 7.31.UD10. Can you try with this version? Ben.

Apologies if you get this twice but I distinctly remember there were bugs with ontape restores in 7.31.UC8 and the backup will appear to be "corrupt". Trying again with 7.31.UD10 might get a successful result, assuming you can get hold of this. Ben.
