  • 1.  How to uninstall the Storage Optimization optional add-on feature on IDS 12.10?

    Posted 22 days ago
    Need to uninstall the Storage Optimization optional add-on feature on IDS 12.10, but I can't seem to find the documentation on how to do so any where in the IBM/HCL docs.
    Any one knows?
    Thanks in advance!

    My understanding is that there is nothing to uninstall, but you do need to make sure that you are NOT using compression anywhere.

    onstat -g ppd should show nothing.

    I have seen ILMT report compression is in use, when it really isn't...and that can be a pain.

    The following should also show FALSE when run against sysmaster:

    select first 1
    case when sysmaster:bitval(feature_flags, "0x2000")=1 then "TRUE"
    else "FALSE"
    end compression
    from syslicenseinfo
    order by year desc, week desc;

    Hey Mike,
    Thanks for the checks. I'll run them to verify.
    Nonetheless, I understand that it is included in the IDS 12.10 Advanced Enterprise Edition and Advanced Developer Edition, but it is an optional add-on for the Informix Enterprise edition, least as per Carlton here: https://www.iiug.org/en/services/compare-the-informix-version-12-editions/
    Any clue?

    Thanks in advance!

    I think that just means that in those versions, the licensing is included at no additional cost.  It's not a separate install, or separate distinct activation.  But if you are on regular Enterprise, then you can pay an additional licensing cost if you want to use the feature.  At least this is my personal understanding.

    You've got to watch it, because nothing stops you from using compression...but as soon as you do, then it could be considered that you have just "activated" the storage optimization feature.

    I was afraid that was the case. If so, Informix needs to be uninstalled with the uninstall executable, then reinstalled.
    Thanks for the valuable info!
    Cheers!

    I do not believe that Informix needs to be uninstalled/reinstalled.  Compression is built into the regular executable.  Using it does not "install" anything.

    Reinstalling the engine will not do a thing. If you inadvertently used compression and don't use it still and don't want to get hit for license costs for the feature, you may have to export your databases, rebuild the instance from initialization, and then import the databases in order to clear out the compression dictionaries that were saved.

    If it was only a small number of tables, then you should be good to copy the data from those tables to new ones then drop the original tables and rename the new ones (or unload, drop, recreate, reload). That should get rid of the compression dictionaries for those tables.

    However, flags need to be unset from syslicenseinfo. I'm thinking that the database(s) would need to be exported, the instance to be reinitialized and the database imported back to get rid of any flags.

    If you have used the feature, then yes, it will be recorded in syslicenseinfo, along with when/how long you have used it (week/year).

    select year, week,
    case when sysmaster:bitval(feature_flags, "0x2000")=1 then "TRUE"
    else "FALSE"
    end compression
    from syslicenseinfo
    order by year, week;

    It is true that reinitializing Informix would be required to start that table fresh.  Uninstall/reinstall is unnecessary.

    Remember that in Informix 14, compression is included.

    Hello,
    There is an article previously discussing an issue where the Storage Optimization option was detected in Informix Enterprise Edition with ILMT.
