Hey, everyone. I just wanted to the Linux users among you as to which distribution(s) you're using to run Informix and how happy you are with them. Given the death of CentOS, I'm weighing alternatives.

We have been using Ubuntu LTS (long term support) server releases since 2014 and we have been very happy with them.

    I like Fedora cos it's free J

Currently having issues with Ubuntu not playing nicely with IDS 14.latest and OneDB2.latest.  SSL/Crypto library issues.  Ubuntu.latest doesn't like the VM snapshots for some reason.

No such issues with Fedora 32/33/24

    Cheers

    Paul

We use Red Hat Enterprise Linux (currently RHEL 8)

We run Informix on Red Hat EL 7 and Centos 7.  Very happy with them.  At some point we will move to RHEL 8 or 9 and probably Alma Linux (which is downstream from RHEL, as Centos was before Centos Stream came along)

    Hi,
for 2 years ago we migrate from HP to RH7 using IFX 12.10 and it works very good.
I use CentOS 7 for my own lab environment , but soon I will test Rocky Linux "https://rockylinux.org" it is new and free and supposed to be as CentOS.

    Hi Tom,

We migrated some National systems based on INFORMIX - from : "WIN", "AIX", and "HP-UX" to "Red Hat EL 7" - and there is no problems ... till now.

    The choice is yours.

Question for those who were using CentOS, what did you move to?

    David:

That's what I'm wondering, too. RHEL is out for us, not only because of the cost associated, but because we had licenses at one time and found the support to be utterly terrible. Plus, they'd restrict which repositories you could access based on your license type. No thanks.

I'm playing with AlmaLinux now, but it's not quite ready for prime time. There are certain tools we use that simply aren't in any of their repositories just yet. That can be worked around, but I'd rather not have to.

I really like the various Ubuntu based distributions. Never had a problem accessing any repository. Updates are clean.

Well it's not dead yet. CentOS 7 is supported until June 30th 2024. If CentOS 7 meets your needs you could sit tight for a while and see how the market for a stable, free, non-bleeding edge distro. develops.

It is only CentOS 8 which has an imminent and sudden end of life date (Dec 31st 2021) and which presents an urgent situation if you need security patches in the future.

I am aware RHEL 7 / CentOS 7 is not an option for AMD EPYC Zen3 (Milan) CPUs.

If you go by the official stance for Informix v14.10 (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/informix-server-system-requirements) your non-RHEL or CentOS options are:
    SLES v12 or v15
    Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 17.10, 18.04 LTS or 20.04 LTS

I would restrict any choice I made on this to one of these options.

Given CentOS 8's early EOL, it would be good if HCL or IBM could make a recommendation about support for the RHEL 8 clones mentioned already in this thread, RockyLinux or AlmaLinux.

    Hi All

Yes, this has been a really disappointing thing which I bet is placing a good number of companies 'in trouble' (to be polite). That's the game of Open Source: durability is not part of their vocabulary

For my part I have started testing Almalinux 8 which seems pretty interesting, and the base of my starting decision had been this post ( caution, in French but google translate or DeepL are your friends)

    https://www.linuxtricks.fr/news/10-logiciels-libres/495-mon-choix-post-centos-alma-linux/

Once translated, the approach of the choice is interesting, but again, there is no guarantee on the future.

Unfortunately , my tested started really well until I hit a major problem of outdated RAID drivers for Dell Servers (in fact that Red hat 8.5 stopped supporting...) which are making the adoption of AlmaLinux more complicated and time consuming(I would have had the same issues with Centos...)

The AlmaLinux community seems pretty much reactive, but their forum is not structured as well as forums we are used to use. But it will probably get better with time.

So at the moment I am between investing some time to build a composite boot with my old raid driver and Alma 8.5, or going Ubuntu for good. Art K's spirit is pushing there
