    Posted Mon July 26, 2021 12:49 PM
Planning to upgrade a set of 11.70 databases to 14.10.  Need to know more about how users/connections are counted/limited for the various editions.  Seems to be 25 max.

Installed the 14.10.C5 version on Windows Server 2012.  Didn't run the version installer, so by default, developer edition.  I opened up a bunch of command tool windows and in each one opened a database with dbaccess.  This worked 25 times and failed on the 26th with a -25571 (could not create thread) error.

Thinking this may have been a developer edition limit, I ran the version installer to convert it to Innovator-C.  (onstat -v confirms it's now the ie edition).  Same thing.  25 dbacess's, the 26th fails.  Is this an Informix limit for these 2 editions?  Or an Informix setting?  Or is this something else in the OS that's causing this?

What are the limits for users/connections/threads for 14.10 Developer and Innovator-C editions?  Or any other editions.

Onstat -u shows 41 threads (25 are my dbacess commands, 16 are various informix user threads).

The code that uses the database is FourJs Genero.  There's a container box and each screen runs a new program that opens a window within the container.  Each of these sub-programs has a connection to the database.  25 connections is very limiting.  It's not 25 people.  We can have only 6 people.  If they try to open up 5 screens while using our program, that's 30 connections to the database, which is over the limit we're seeing of 25. If we can't go over 25 programs connecting to the database, that's a problem.

Did you restart the db server after running that edition installer?
oninit.exe will pick up edition info only when coming up.

    Joel

Did you check your NETTYPE parameter in the onconfig file:

    Which values do you have?

Thank you!  That was it!  It needed a reboot.

I had found documentation (for Unix/Linux) that demonstrated using the version installer.  In fact, I think it specifically said a reboot was not necessary.

So I ran the Innovator-C installer.  Then I did an onstat -v (or -version) and saw that the DE in the version (developer edition) changed to an IE (Innovator-C Edition).  So I figured it was working like IE.  Apparently not everything.  But the reboot fixed it.  I don't know how many users I can get, but I'm past 25 now.

Thank you again for the tip!

Innovator C has limits. The limits are not on connections but on memory (8 GB) , total data size stored (50 GB) and cpus (2 core) allowed.
Also, there are features in the product not allowed in this edition. It is allowed for production use.

Those limits of Innovator-C seem perfect.

The dbspace for data is 2gb and not fully used.  Plus other spaces like rootdbs and tempdbs.  No large object spaces.  So we're well under 50gb of disk.  Not that it matters, but I'm assuming that's 50mb of the primary dbspaces.  Mirrored dbspaces don't count towards the 50gb or do they?  They currently don't mirror, but when I roll out 14.10, I'd like to mirror the data.

8gb RAM is way more than we need.  8gb could cache the entire data dbspace 4 times over.  The current installations are using the 11.70 RAM default of 100mb.  The servers aren't big on memory, so the most I'd want to expand it to is 1gb RAM.  Which is 10 times more than they have now.  And they aren't complaining with 100mb.  It might speed up some of the poorly written reports I've inherited though.

We're not using any of the features that are blocked off.

So without stopping at 25 connections, Innovator-C seems perfect for us.  I'll bring up the support contract with my boss.

    Thank you for your input.

Thank you to all that suggested NETTYPE, but it was a reboot that was needed.

Art, good to hear from you.  I don't think I've seen or spoken to you since IIUG conferences in the 2000's.

According to Scott Pickett, Developer Edition has a cap of 25 connections.  I ran the Innovator-C installer and the version was showing as IE, but was still capping at 25 users - until the reboot.  Now I'm up to 33 and am going to keep going until I get to 100 or find a cap.

Scott, we are looking at Innovator-C and that is what I was trying to install for testing.  It is supposed to be able to be used commercially for small workloads.  An IIUG document says there's no license fee, but redistribution requires a separate license.  I'm not exactly sure what that means.

    Joel:

Good to hear from you as well.

The Innovator-C requirement that "redistribution requires a separate license" means that if you want to distribute copies of Informix Innovator-C either as is or embedded in some software or hardware product you have to become an IBM Partner and pay a nominal license fee for each copy (which you can recover as part of the license/sale price of your embedded product). It's usually a few hundred dollars, but has to be negotiated with IBM. Users of your product have to come to you for support though, no IBM support unless paid separately (see below) directly to IBM.

Also, unlike Developer Edition, you can purchase optional IBM support for Innovator-C for somewhere around $2,000/ann (not sure what the exact amount is).

As far as I am aware, there are no user connection limits on any Informix Edition (except on Workgroup Edition with a user based license metric). It may be that you need to adjust the NETTYPE setting in your ONCONFIG file.

Developer Edition, which is not to be used in a production environment as it is free, for development and test environment, with other limits on cpus, memory and total database size, has a hard stop 25 connection limit enforced in the code.
