  • 1.  Aginity Replacement - What are folks using for an IDE?

    Posted Tue January 14, 2020 03:03 PM

Getting the emails that Aginity will be an annual subscription: $250/user for Workbench, $150/user for pro.

What are folks using for an IDE with Netezza / IPS that is not Aginity?
I really enjoyed the features of workbench, especially being able to quickly check table distribution. I have over 300 users I need to migrate to something else and/or see if they want to stomach the new annual licensing fees.

    Thanks!

    Dan

I am interested to know where you are getting the emails from.  Are they from Aginity or a third party?

According to the Aginity web site, they discontinued development of Aginity Workbench (https://www.aginity.com/products/aginity-workbench/).  Aginity Pro is the replacement for Aginity Workbench and is free.  Aginity Team is $89/month/seat.  (https://www.aginity.com/pricing/)  Sine we do not need the collaborative features of Aginity team, our individuals in the DBA and analytics groups switched from Aginity Workbench to Aginity Pro.

As an alternative, I like WinSQL.  The lite version is free and works well for most folks for simple querying.  The pro version has some nice features, used it for several years at previous companies. (https://web.synametrics.com/WinSQLCost.htm)

Aginity Pro is only free for individuals and companies with 5 employees or less. The OP stated he has 300 users. We also have over 5 users and will probably be looking for a new tool. Bonus for something that works with 2-factor authentication.

    Hey Chris,

Here is the message we're receiving:

    Good afternoon Aginity Top Users,

I'm hopeful that things have been well and we wish you a Happy New Year!  We have spoken over the past quarter with numerous users including some of you but have not been able to get connected with the owner of the Aginity applications.  I am starting with our top users (based on queries executed) hoping you can help introduce us to the application owner or a procurement agent.

We wanted to give  you a heads up that Aginity will soon no longer be supporting free use of our products Aginity Pro and Aginity Workbench for enterprise users.  All enterprise users will be required to obtain an enterprise license by February 28, 2020.

    • If you'd like to continue to download the legacy product, Aginity Workbench, AS IS, the price will be $250 per user per year billed annually.
    • We have quite a few adopted users of our Workbench replacement product, Aginity Pro, which is great!  The product has been drastically improved over the past 3 months and is almost at parity with Workbench plus it adds so many more powerful features than Workbench did like search and catalog capabilities.
      • The price of Aginity Pro will be $100 per user per year billed annually.

The implementation of this new pricing policy will coincide with the discontinuation of the free download and use of Aginity Workbench and Aginity Pro products for enterprises.

We are making the changes to continue offering you the quality support you expect and deserve as well as to put more investment in Aginity Pro and Aginity Team.  We will be extending the number and depth of support for data platforms, continuing to add valued features for both SQL editing and cataloging, and adding required infosec features such as enterprise authentication and authorization for these new products.

We'd very much like to move our discussions and relationship to a more formal customer relationship and look forward to your review of our latest release and follow on discussions.

Could you help me understand who I can coordinate with or make an introduction for me?

    Best regards,

Thanks, Daniel, I did not receive an email.  I will probably drop Aginity pro and go back to WinSQL - the Lite version is free and I have used it for years, so it is very familiar.

    Hi Daniel,

They are rebuilding the Aginity to support multiple databases with one application instead of separate Workbench for each database like Netezza, Greenplum, etc. Aginity Pro uses JDBC, and it doesn't have all the functionality which they have on Workbench. However, Aginity Pro is their future product, and they are promoting it heavily and pushing updates frequently than ever. DBeaver is another useful JDBC based tool that supports many databases, including Netezza, DB2, MariaDB, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc. They have free and paid tools. Check it out at https://dbeaver.io/.
