    Hi All,

If I want to install db2luw, do I need to match the machine specifications to the developer edition's limitations even though db2 physically limits the number of cores and shared memory size?

For example, I understand the db2 license policy as below.

    case 1) Server - 16 core, 128 GB, Db2 11.5 Developer Edition
→ OK because it is free.

    case 2) Server - 32 core, 128 GB, Db2 11.5 Standard Edition  PVU 16 core
→ Not OK because of number of physical cores, but installation possible.

    case 3) Server - 4 core, 256 GB, Db2 11.5 Standard Edition  PVU 4 core
→ Not OK because of physical memory size, but installation possible.

    case 4) Server - 16 core, 128 GB, Db2 11.5 Standard Edition  PVU 16 core
    → OK

    Please explain if I misunderstand.

    Hey,

It is not mandatory to match the specs. The Specs mentioned means these are the limits and you can't exceed probably.

    Thank you. Rizwan.
Db2 installs well even though the physical system resources (CPU, RAM) are more than the limits that Db2 limits.
So I am confused by the license description.

    Hi,

As I understand the IBM license, that's correct. Except case 1.
For Db2 11.5 Community Edition (Developer) the server must not have more than 4 cores and 16 GB RAM.

Hi Dennis, Thanks for your reply.
I understand that Db2 Developer Edition can be used in production for free.

I also know that Db2 Developer Edition limits the use of resources of 4 cores and 16 GB RAM.
But do I have to buy a server with exactly 4 cores and 16 GB RAM even though the Db2 process limits resource usage?

    Hi SangGyu,

Db2 Developer Edition is free. Take a look at this discussion.

    You can use virtual servers.

    All is correct.
In case 1 : DB2 Developer-C will use only the licensed free resource (4 core / 16 GB ram) limiting also the total dimension of the database (100 GB)
You can use DB2 on all of these configuration without incurring in licensing problem because is auto-limiting indipendently of the machine configuration (as in accord with the licensed product).
