Db2 Recovery Expert: Recovery Plan and JCL Generation in batch now available via ISPF (PH16042)

By Robert Bersano posted Mon February 24, 2020 03:59 PM

Recovery Expert has now introduced the ability to generate both recovery plans and the recovery JCL for a plan in batch.  This comes in handy if you have a need to run a reoccurring job that will build the recovery plans and then execute the results of that recovery plan.  It is also useful when having to build a recovery plan for a large number of objects.  Doing so can sometimes tie up your ISPF session while the plans/recovery JCL is being built.  Now that it can be done in batch it will help free up your TSO session and can be scheduled when the system is not as busy.

If “Batch” is selected for the Generation Method, the new panel "Batch Plans Generation Options" will be shown on the next step.

On this panel, you can choose one or more suitable recovery plans, so for this example you can see we selected both the RECOVER and RECOVER with BACKOUT recovery plans. The program will try to generate only the selected plans; other plans will not be generated. The recovery JCL will be generated only for the most optimal (by the estimated cost) plan. Again, estimated cost is a relative cost that is determined by such factors as number of image copies to be processed, are they on tape or disk and the amount of log which needs to be applied.  This panel is not shown if Redirected Recovery is enabled, because there is only one plan generated for Redirected Recovery.

After the recovery plans are selected you will then be presented with the Build Job Options panel.  On this panel the first set of options (“Options for the batch utility”) is used to build the job that will generate the recovery plans, this is the job that will run in batch.  The second set of options (“Options for the recovery JCL”) is used by the batch utility when generating the recovery JCL.

Here is an example of the batch job that gets created which will be used to generate the Recovery Plans as well as the Recovery JCL.  So, submitting this job will create the actual recovery plan and recovery JCL generation in a separate job. Any messages showing the progress of this process may be found in the job output. Generated recovery jobs will be saved to the corresponding data set that is specified.
