We're pleased to announce the release of Db2 for z/OS Developer Extension 1.3, which delivers capabilities for analyzing and tuning Db2 for z/OS SQL statements. This release represents significant progress on the path of integrating key Data Studio and DSM functionality into a modern Db2 for z/OS Visual Studio Code development environment.

Building upon the SQL Tuning Services functionality that was delivered in the Database Services Expansion Pack feature of Db2 Accessories Suite 4.2 (which is a prereq for using the new tuning features in 1.3), Db2 for z/OS Developer Extension 1.3 makes it easy to run several tuning tools that you might already be familiar with -- Visual Explain, Statistics Advisor, and Capture Query Environment -- directly from the extension's editor. It also provides the ability to create, standardize, and drop EXPLAIN tables, share and revoke privileges that are required to run tuning actions, and retain the history of your tuning activities over time.

The following figure shows many of these features in action:
Db2 for z/OS Developer Extension is available now on Microsoft Visual Studio Code Marketplace. We hope you'll check it out. As mentioned previously, the new tuning features require the Database Services Expansion Pack feature of Db2 Accessories Suite 4.2. You can read more about it here.
