Pasting data into Editable tables

  • 1.  Pasting data into Editable tables

    Hi Everyone,
         We current have a process we are using CSV file to load data into our GL system.  I have created a report that uses an editable table so the users can just copy and past the data into table.  However , I seem to run into an issues with data having a large amount of row (1K0.  Does anyone know what the best process is or is it possible to have a user import to an editable table.  Any ideas or suggestion would great.  Thanks everyone!

    @Michael Enslein

    Thanks for asking this - I used to use editable tables all the time in R11 but have not made my way back to them since 12 came out. Interested to see the responses to this.

    @Renee Daignault thanks for taking SO MANY shifts monitoring community questions! Since this is posted as discussion, thought I'd tag you in case you have any insight for Michael :-)

    Hi Michael.  Editable tables do have an Upload step in their transform pipeline, so it your users have Studio access, they should be able to upload the .csv file directly to the editable table that way.  If the users do not have Studio access, you may be able to leverage the Table Upload component to give them functionality that allows them to upload to that table from the reporting surface.  https://help.apptio.com/en-us/studio/reports/table-report-upload-component.htm

    Full disclosure... I personally have not used either of these features personally, so I cannot say that they will work exactly the way you are looking for, but this would be where I would start.

    This is DOPE! @James Funk. I tried to read into this a bit more, but have a question. Will users that upload data be able "Check-In" Data? I'm not sure if it works like DataLink, where a table gets put into the DL "Parking Lot" for TBMA approval before checking in.

    If using the Table Upload component, my understanding is that a user will click the Edit button and this will check the table out to them.  They do their upload, and when they click Save, the regular Check In dialog box pops up where they can enter their check in notes.  If there are errors, then they may need to reach out to the TBMA to resolve, but as long as there aren't any errors, then it shouldn't require any TBMA intervention (aside from ensuring that the data is promoted to Prod since this does load data in Dev which then kicks off a dev/stage calc).

    Yes, I've seen that happen, @Richard Coronado. I found in my check-in list an entry for an update to an editable table.

    Hey Michael - Is there a reason you are using the editable table over the table load in Apptio for this table? There is not a technical limit on the editable tables, however, after a few hundred rows it does tend to be hard to manage.  If the file is a CSV it might be worth it to simply change the file to an excel and load it manually that way.

    @Renee Daignault Our current journaling process has the team submitting as we close the month.  Currently, they submit these files to our GL system as csv files.  I had set this up to try and have them paste the data in as they completed the journals, then we could load in Apptio as needed.  However, I can seem to paste more than a few rows at a time.  Trying to have the users input the data with having me to get involved.

    Hi @Michael Enslein! Out of curiosity, why aren't you using your GL system to load into Apptio? What system are you currently using for financials? We may be able to help you with some ideas to improve this process.

    @Richard Coronado We do use our gl system to load Apptio however it does not contain all of the information that we want to capture in Apptio.  We have a limited number of fields and characters to load data into the gl record.   So we have to enhance it manually.
