  • 1.  Process for moving off CR9 Physical HMC to Virtual HMC Appliance

    Posted Wed May 24, 2023 05:35 AM

    Hi All,

I have created a vHMC appliance same version as my physical HMC CR9. Trying to see if there is a pointers or docs that can help make this process smooth. I want to remove the CR9 and replace with the vHMC which can then be upgraded to latest version.  One concern is losing my VIOS and VIO Client configs or are they on the managed server? I wondering if I connect the vHMC to the managed server after connection I will see everything ...

    Thanks, Brad

If both HMC's are at the same level of code you can have them both connected at the same time.  You can have up to 3 HMC's connected to a system at a time.  We have two data centers.  Each has at least one Power system.  Each data center also has a vm environment.  Each vm environment has one vHMC talking to the Power systems in both data centers.  I know that some people think you should only have your HMC talking to your Power system on it's own dedicated circuit.  To me it seems odd that your engineering data, HR data, customer data, health data can be on your company wide network but it's curtains for the free world if the connection from your hmc to your power system is on the company network.  Having both HMC's connected, with different IP addresses of course, is great redundancy.

But, yes, your VIOS configurations are on the Power system itself and not on the HMC.  It should be a simple matter of just adding the connection to the system and it will self discover all the LPARs, lpar profiles, etc.

I moved from physical HMC to vHMC.  Great move!  I've been on HMC since early ship.  Tired of that upgrade treadmill.  And, when I go to upgrade my vHMC, I can do a snapshot first in case it goes badly.  Our data centers are at least 2 hours away from my office.  I kind of centered between the two.  I do HMC updates remotely, firmware updates on the power systems remotely, OS upgrades on the lpars remotely.  Tape is all VTL, replicated between the two data centers.  All is well.  Instead of having to access a physical HMC via remote access to a KVM for those rare cases when the remote gui isn't the tool (like starting a shared 5250 session) I just use a vm remote console.

    Two Power 10's and a Power 9.
