    Hello,

Does an complete new/fresh install need to be done in order to move from Cognos 11.0.11 to Cognos 11.1?

    Thanks-Jen

@Jenifer Broughton Nope, you can do an over the top install from CA 11.0.11 to 11.1.x.

You can see the blog post around over the top vs new install located here

Also, it is always recommended to do a full content store backup before installing a new version of Cognos.

The caveat with an over the top install is that you loose the ability to compare or diagnose issues.  Ideally you would not have failures due exclusively to an upgrade but lets be realistic.  The decision is really yours but the product can certainly handle it as Denny articulated. I have written a series of blogs related to the upgrade which was focused on 10.x to 11.x but the same process would apply to an 11.0.x to 11.1.x

We have been doing over the top installs for every version since 11.0.5. We ran into issues going to 11.1.1 with over the top installs. The report studio toolbox icon was missing, prevented certain new features from loading without javascript errors, and scheduled jobs failed with msg MSR-SMT-2190 - Internal error trying to create smart metadata. After several talks with IBM support to fix the issues, they suggested we do a clean install and everything worked as expected after that. They were still perplexed at how this worked because over the top installs are the way forward.

All that to say, start with over the top, but be ready with a fresh install if some things appear to be buggy.

@Nick Kennedy  Thanks for this insight.  It's good to know this upfront.

FYI if you ask support, they will advise it is a best practice with any upgrade to do a fresh install.

    Best wishes,

    I agree with @Wendi Lewis.

Over-the-top install was a big plus when 1st introduced, as it saves a lot of time when upgrading, especially if you have a distributed environment. It is sad to see how unreliable this approach has become, to the point where IBM themselves advise against it.

Hope this is fixed in future releases.

Not defending the process of over the top or clean install I think the future will be different as container deployment becomes the new process. I suspect there will be plenty of overlap where both will be supported but if you are not familiar with this you should start learning Docker because its coming :)

@NORBERT Bracke  Hi Norbert. I appreciate the feedback.  I will check into 'Docker'.  I am not familiar with it.
