What I learned completing IBM Z Concepts & Advanced Badges on Z Xplore

Just earned my IBM Z Concepts and Advanced Badges on Z Xplore, and wanted to share a few things that genuinely changed how I think about mainframes.

Honestly, I came in thinking mainframes were outdated technology that big companies just hadn't gotten around to replacing yet. Turns out I had it completely backwards.

IBM Z systems process over 30 billion transactions every single day. Your ATM withdrawal, your flight booking, your bank transfer - there's a very good chance a mainframe is involved. That realization alone made me take this a lot more seriously.

Some of the concepts that stood out to me:

z/OS is IBM Z's flagship operating system and it's built around reliability and security in a way that general purpose operating systems simply aren't. LPARs (Logical Partitions) let you split one physical machine into multiple isolated environments - similar to virtual machines but operating at a completely different scale. Sysplex allows multiple IBM Z systems to work together as one, which is how they achieve that famous 99.9999% availability. JCL (Job Control Language) is how you instruct z/OS to run programs and manage workloads. And RACF handles security and access control at the hardware level.

The AI angle surprised me the most. The IBM Telum processor has an on-chip AI accelerator built directly into the hardware. This isn't legacy tech waiting to be replaced - it's being actively evolved.

Next up for me is COBOL, IBM MQ, and working towards the Credly All Star Badge, alongside the AI training in the Mainframe Skills Depot.

If you're on the fence about getting into IBM Z, the Z Xplore platform is genuinely beginner friendly. I had no mainframe background coming in and it was very approachable.

Thanks to @Adam LG Ring for pointing me in the right direction.
