  • 1.  Vendors: Are there HMC screen shot alternatives to CALL QLZARCAPI?

    Many vendors want you to run

    CALL QCMD

    CALL  QLZARCAPI

    And send that screenshot in.  Well, we are migrating to a new system.  We have the LPARs configured and only LIC installed, not the full OS.  We will install the full OS on day of migration and would rather have the keys in hand instead of calling that day only to be told the person who does that has a day off.

    Are there HMC screenshot(s) which are acceptable to vendors?  If IBM were to accept an idea which would display all the information available on CALL QLZARCAPI on a single HMC screenshot would you, as a vendor, find that acceptable?

    Now if only IBM could generate such a screen and not have their web developers wailing and gnashing their teeth because having that much information on a single screen goes against current design preferences.

    I've run the HMCScanner for several years ... once per year and it is chock for of all kinds of HMC info. Just gotta have a current version of Java running on your PC / laptop to run it.

    With the initial question about vendor acceptance in mind, do you think a vendor would accept the output from hmcscanner?

    I'm guessing the LPAR_CPU tab might be the closest to what they are looking for.  However that tab doesn't list the partition number.

    Some vendors don't want you to use iACS copy and just send them the text from the QLZARCAPI API.  They want something like Windows snip which makes it an image with the green screen.  I'm guessing just to make it more difficult to fudge the CPU utilization, etc.  So would they accept this spreadsheet?  One reason why I may prefer seeing it all on one screen of an HMC GUI.

    I may email the author of hmcscanner and ask for their recommendation as an alternative to QLZARCAPI.

    What the vendor will accept is completely up to the vendor, so you really need to ask them.  Of course there are alternatives, as others have mentioned, but the real question is whether your vendors will accept them.  

    A fairly easy alternative if you are using external storage is to create a small set of volumes with a basic "golden copy" O/S install and map them to your newly created partitions as needed to do things like run QLZARCAPI, verify fiber channel and ethernet connectivity, etc.  Use flashcopy/snapshots, cloning and storage replication to move the volumes around as needed to mount to multiple new partitions.

    You're spot on with vendor acceptance.

    The trick is that that partition id's have to be exact, etc.

    Currently we only put LIC on it to verify FC connection to the SAN, tape, etc.  Not OS.  If I put OS on it, doesn't that start the countdown clock on licensing?  IBM's gotten pretty creative to catch those who just restore their systems every 50-69 days in an attempt to bypass licensing.  Not that I'm trying to scam IBM but when they try to catch miscreants the innocent often get trampled.

    Where, other than the API itself, can you find this information?

    PROCESSOR FEATURE CODE: EPGM.

    PROCESSOR GROUP:  P20

    It's not jumping out to me on HMCscanner or on the HMC itself.
