  • 1.  Unable to install Aix 7.3 TL3 SP0 / Aix 7.2 TL5 SP10 BOS from bootable usb on Power 10 S1012

    Posted Wed February 04, 2026 12:05 PM

    Hi All,

We have a new P10 Server S1012 with 4 cores and 64 GB RAM and we are unable to install fresh Aix 7.3 TL3 SP0 from bootable usb on Power 10 S1012 .

The usb was made bootable using proper steps as mentioned on IBM site . We have two 800GB Nvme disks on the server with no other Storage.

We also tried to install Aix 7.2 TL5 SP10 image with usb and it is also getting failed with same error.

We are able to see the usb bootable image in SMS menu on the server and it also install the filesets on the Nvme disk that we chose but in the end it gets failed with an error as Follows:

    Hi,

It looks like you're booting the LPAR in diagnostic mode. What options are you choosing in SMS after selecting the USB drive?

it automatically reboots and goes into diagnostic mode.

    Options choosen in SMS are:

    1. Select / Install Boot Device
    2. then choose Hard Disk
    3. then choose USB
    4. then boot from it in Normal Mode

    Hello
per system documentation minimum AIX OS levels for direct install are :
    AIX Version 7.3 Technology Level 2 SP2 (P10 mode)
    • AIX Version 7.2 Technology Level 5 SP8 (P9-compatibility mode)
(also in redbook : The Power S1012 servers support the following minimum levels of the AIX operating system
when installed by using direct I/O connectivity:
AIX Version 7.3 with the 7300-02 Technology Level and Service Pack 7300-02-02-2420, or
    later (running in P10 mode)
AIX Version 7.3 with the 7300-01 Technology Level and Service Pack 7300-01-04-2420, or
    later (planned availability - July 26, 2024)
AIX Version 7.2 with the 7200-05 Technology Level and Service Pack 7200-05-08-2420, or
    later (running in P9 mode).
    This could be the explanation.
    Have a nice day !
    Chris

    Hi,

If you have allocated a VTPM to the LPAR then you need 7.3 TL3 SP1.

    Hi,

Check this link first for the System Software Map for Power Systems S1012 (9028-21B) and AIX – All I/O Configurations & Virtual I/O Only , so you can understand what is compatible.

below the both links for All I/O Configurations & Virtual I/O Only

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/system-software-map-power-systems-s1012-9028-21b-and-aix-all-io-configurations

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/system-software-map-power-systems-s1012-9028-21b-and-aix-virtual-io-only

For the AIX bootable image, burning it using Rufus, then booting from the USB.

    Thank you ,
