  • 1.  Starting Cognos after a server recycle

    Posted 7 days ago

My apologies if I have missed this answer before. We recently upgraded to Cognos 12 from Cognos 11 and it has been quite challenging getting all 4k users to move from Query Studio to Report Studio. Anyway, my issue is when we recycle the server or stop and start Cognos, it takes roughly 20-30 minutes to come up. I have never seen this before. I am not sure what is happening. It happens on my DEV server but not my TEST server. Both are identical. Windows 2022, Cognos 12.1.0-2504081748

Has anyone experienced this? It is not easy to just "Install a fix-pack" or the latest version. I was hoping there was something I could do with the already installed version to fix it.

Appreciate any help. Love this forum and appreciate all the dinosaurs like me still working with Cognos :-)

    Hi Will,

Are you on single stack or multi-server deployment?
Also, on what part of the startup process do you see is taking time?

    Hi Will,

You can try to cleaning temporary Java workarea in Cognos Analytics:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/cleaning-temporary-java-workarea-cognos-analytics

You need to stop Cognos Analytics before doing this.

There is also this useful article:

Which Cognos Analytics files need to be excluded from a virus scan?

Here is more detail. What is happening is that Cognos itself starts in about 2 minutes which is normal. What the issue seems to be is loading the webpage. Navigating to Cognos it just spins and wont launch. I see a bunch of CMQUERYMULTIPLECACHE lines in audit log that take forever. Seems like once those are done after about 20 minutes the page will load. I am going to delete the indices folder and try that.

    Will,

You might also try the following:

Another browser (so no cache), another user (so no issue with a specific profile)

You might want to disable all extensions with the following command: <webserver_name>:<port_number>/bi/?factoryMode=true

See Running Cognos Analytics with customized extensions and views disabled - IBM Documentation for more information.

Don't forget to exclude files from virus scan (from my previous email).

Last idea, if you are reading to read logs, you can setup diagnostic logging to troubleshoot Cognos service startup problems.

    Best regards,
