  • 1.  Redirected recovery from System Level Backup

    Posted Fri February 20, 2026 01:09 AM

    How many of us are using System Level backups? Wouldn't it be useful if we could do a redirected recovery from this backup type A Aha has been raised and I suggest it would be a good one to vote for it. Our site is moving away from dependancies on regular image copies to supporting SLB. This at the moment is one of the downsides that we can't directly do a redirected restore .

    Please vote.

    Hello Craig,

    really interesting idea. In fact the reason behind the idea was kind of blowminding to me --> "Our site is moving away from dependancies on regular image copies to supporting SLB"

    I would love to hear more about this approach :-)

    Thanks!

    P.S. -> Voted!

    Hi Soledad

    Thanks for your interest and the vote of support.

    A number of reasons have led us to this move but I feel the primary driver is the  window that our image copies are continually growing and encroaches on the high business part of the day.   This also consumes considerable cpu (though recent maintenance has ZIIP offloaded some of this).

    We already are using SLB in SAP systems as the core backup strategy and this works well, it also supports subsystem cloning . It is now that we are  moving all other non SAP system this way. The visual simplicity of it is appealing along with the consistency across all our systems in methods. This will return a substantial backup window to our business, reduce CPU  and you know one of the slowest to backup up are the LOB AUX TS's.

    The requirement to do a redirected recovery from an SLB seems to be biggest issue for us in following this direction. At the moment you have to build an image copy from the SLB then use that in a recovery, this adds an extra layer to recovery.  Current practise for us is to do a DSN1COPY from the SLB and then LOG APPLY (or REDO logs)  if needed.
