  • 1.  Power 9 to Power 11 migration

    Posted Wed March 11, 2026 08:09 AM
Upgraded from a Power 9 with internal SSD's to a Power 11 using a FS7300 SAN with NVMe drives.  Same VTL for backup.
    Reduction in save times:
    LPAR1: From 2:04 to 1:30
    LPAR2: From 1:07 to 0:33
    LPAR3: From 0:23 to 0:14
    LPAR4: From 2:21 to 1:22
Getting ready to wipe the data and see if I can find a buyer for that Power 9.

That is great news - Congrats !
Power9 to Power11 is an excellent migration path for a solid performance bump.

    Hi Robert,

Congratulations on the successful completion of the migration. Could you please share the procedure or approach followed during the migration for our reference?

The VIOS, the Fiber Channel switches, and the SAN were all configured by consultants.  The IBM i and the AIX are outlined in another response.

    Robert,

I'm curious how you performed the migrations from server to server (LPAR to LPAR). Were they RISC migrations or just full save/restores because the LPARS were on same IBM i version or (by any chance) did you use DBM Migrate While Active, etc.?

    Thanks, Scott

I don't understand the term "RISC migrations".  Are you talking about something like the very first scenario in https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.6.0?topic=migrations-scenarios-data-migration  ?

If so, that is not what we did.  All LPARs of IBM i were, and still are, on 7.5.  I did a full BRMS save/restore.  Why BRMS?  Because we do all of our saves with BRMS and what better way to test your recovery?  Besides saving/restoring to four drives on the media library at the same time speeds things along.

The consultant who did the AIX migration did it differently.  For one, AIX is not attached to the media library (a VTL by the way).  He migrated the AIX partition from internal disk hosted by IBMi to our FS7300 SAN.  Then he attached that to the Power 11.

I supposed I could have done IBM i similar to that.  But doing it my way was less expensive in SAN consultant dollars and gave me more save/restore experience.  I've done multiple migrations this way and my comfort level was high.  I follow the report generated by STRRCYBRM OPTION(*SYSTEM) ACTION(*REPORT) PERIOD((*AVAIL *CURRENT)) and where it told me to, a little of IBM i documentation.

From the BRMS recovery report there is a section with:

    **************************************************************************
The following report is to be used in conjunction with the "Recovering
your system" topic, SC41-5304, to assist with recovery from failures.
    **************************************************************************
When recovering the system, refer to the section on "Recovering
after a Complete Loss" under chapter "Selecting the Right Recovery
Strategy" in the "Recovering your system" topic, and the details shown
below to determine which recovery steps should be taken and the media
       needed for each step.

Yes, the first scenario is the situation I was referring to.  We are an IBM BP but our clients are local governments who do not migrate their servers often.  So right now, I'm doing a lot of 7.3 to 7.5 POWER8 to POWER10 migrations.  The term I used comes from the way the POWER10 was configured with feature code 0205 RISC-to-RISC Data Migration rather than FC 5000  Software Preload Required.  With FC 0205 IBM only loads the LIC and base OS so that you can follow the proper restore procedures and then install the rest of the OS (upgrading the QUSRSYS portion) and the same LPPs that were on the old server.

    Thanks for your reply.

I've never concerned myself with those two features and just IPL from tape and do a scratch install.  The days of spinning disks are long past us so having disks initialized and preloaded with LIC isn't the time saver it once was.  Now, when I initialize from tape I know that, even down to the microcode, I'm at matching PTF levels.
