  • 1.  Power 11 firmware update ftp_get() failed with system rc=2 and component rc=11

    New Power 11.  Upgrading firmware from 116 to 119.  Went to fix central and downloaded 119.  I put it on a local IBMi based ftp server which I successfully use from Power 9 and Power 10 servers.  When I run the firmware update I am getting an error when picking the update package:
    firmware update ftp_get() failed with system rc=2 and component rc=11
    I know some will squawk that perhaps ftp is being blocked but this is not the case.  As stated before, the Power 9 and the Power 10's have no problem with this site.
    I can successfully update if I select the IBM Website.  But that's slower if you've already downloaded the firmware.  Especially since, for the last several updates, you always have to run the update twice.

    Is the Power 11 HMC managed? If so you could attempt to load the firmware files to to the HMC on a mount point and utilize the -r mountpoint -d (HMC Directory) command instead of utilizing IBM I FTP

    Hi Robert,

    Perhaps take a look at the "import" function on the HMC? This will download the firmware image at the time you run the import. When it's time to do the actual update, the image file will be available on the HMC. I use it sometimes to avoid being dependent on ibm.com during a tight update window.

    I appreciate the suggestions of alternatives.  However, I'd really like to know why I'm getting that message.

    Looking in the code, it seems it is a problem getting the file from the ftp server. It could be permissions related. You should open a case, and we can get more data to see what is happening in detail. Pedbg will be needed to investigate it further.
