Dear Carlos,
LTO-10 drives are available for TS4500 and Diamondback since 06/2025, and for the new TS4300 with Expert Care (Machine Type 5544 Model E8A) since 12/2025.
The new media can be used in all of them.
Given the native data rate of 400 MB/s, a single 30 TB cartdige could be filled in just under 20 hours.
The new 40 TB cartridge will be utilized for at least 26.5 hours, in an ideal environment.
With slower data read bandwidth, expect even longer times. For this calculation, possible data compression means you have to feed the drive with an even higher bandwidth of read data, your environment has to be constantly capable of this to not fall behind.
If you can't producy the maximum data rate, the drive will use some specific slower speeds (technology called speed matching), down to 157 MB/s. With an average 2,5 : 1 compression, you will still need to feed 392 MB/s, but then the duty cyle is 67 hours. YMMV, it depends on compressability and your sustained bandwith capabilities: network/disk, server, channels.
But: data is not be compressed by average, this was just your overall statistic. The drive uses some of its 4 GB memory to buffer and compress in-flight data, and when you feed in e.g. uninitialized data files with NULLs, you can notice stop/start activity which again affects your cycle times.
Then some applications (e.g. IBM Storage Protect) logically invalidate active data from a cartridge after some retention time. Eventually, these applications might want to reclaim space by consolidating active data to other media.
With 40 TB media, these reclamation jobs will occupy two tape drives for a longer time, if a percentage of free space of a full volume is used as a trigger.
While longer tape drive utilization with less tape mounting activity might be more effective, it could also lead to a demand of additional counts of installed drive for backing up/archiving/destaging other primary data in the same time.
For TSM, restore jobs prematurely cancel out reclamations, so the latter can be restarted when drives are available.
After all, you might gathered your own statistics about how much tapes or data you process, or how much read errors or "motion meters" a tape accumulates, and so on. These might be complicated by different media size.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards / Mes meilleures salutations / Üdvözlettel

Hi Ilja, please elaborate on what statistics you are concerned with, also, what type of library you are referring to, TS4500, TS4300, DB?
