⚡Introducing IBM Db2 Serverless Technical Preview: A serverless database for developers and agents
We're excited to announce the technical preview of IBM Db2 Serverless, a fully managed, cloud-native database service that makes it easy to create, connect, and scale databases without managing infrastructure. It brings the IBM Db2 engine enterprises already trust to a fully serverless model, with self-service provisioning, enterprise-grade security, and elastic scale that requires no capacity planning in advance.

- Ready for an agent-first future - AI assistants and software agents now generate code, provision services and wire applications together. To join that loop, a database must be easy to create and manage programmatically. Db2 Serverless ships the building blocks in the Tech Preview:
- REST APIs for service management and provisioning
- MCP Gateway support for service lifecycle operations
- Automatic scaling and IBM-managed operations
- Branch like you branch code - Snapshot-based branching is a standout at launch. You can now create isolated copies of a database for development and testing, without touching production. Test schema changes, validate updates, try new features and run parallel work, each in its own environment
- Scale to demand, pay for usage - Db2 Serverless cuts operational overhead and ties cost to actual use, so you never overprovision and never wait:
- Elastic scaling: Compute follows workload demand, with no manual capacity planning
- Scale-to-zero: Idle applications pause compute

⚡ What's new in IBM Db2 Warehouse BYOC
This release introduces new features along with improvements in performance and operations on the BYOC Azure Db2 offering:

- Configuring and managing custom TLS certificates: Custom TLS certificates enable you to secure dataplane and engine services using certificates stored in Azure Key Vault, instead of relying on the default platform-generated certificates.

⚡ IBM Db2 Console as a Service (CaaS) 1.0 is now available
IBM Db2 Console as a Service (CaaS) is a fully managed, cloud-native administration console that brings the complete Db2 database management experience to IBM Cloud customers as a first-class deployable service. Rather than embedding the console inside each Db2 database instance, CaaS runs as an independent, multi-tenant platform, allowing the management layer to be updated, scaled, and operated separately from the database engine itself.
What CaaS 1.0 Delivers?
CaaS 1.0 achieves 100% feature parity with the existing Db2 SaaS on-cloud console. Every capability that customers relied on in the prior console is present in CaaS including connections management, backup and restore, compute scaling, user administration, SQL workbench, monitoring, and disaster recovery. In addition, CaaS adds a set of CaaS-exclusive capabilities that were not possible in the coupled architecture:

- A dedicated CaaS Provisioning workflow that allows IBM Cloud account owners to configure a CaaS deployment independently of any individual Db2 instance.
- A CaaS Registration and Redirection Flow that handles first-time user onboarding automatically, routing authenticated IBM Cloud users to the correct tenant console with no manual URL entry.
- Tenant-level Instance Management - the ability to view, pause, resume, and configure multiple Db2 instances from a single console panel.
- LLM Token Usage Metering - real-time tracking of AI token consumption per user and per tenant, feeding directly into the Db2 Launchpad cost explorer for accurate billing attribution.
- LLM Provider Configuration - administrators can configure which large language model backend powers the AI assistant, including endpoint URL and API key management.

⚡What's new in IBM Db2 BYOC
This release introduces new features along with improvements in performance and operations on the BYOC Azure Db2 offering:

- External Restore: Introduces External Restore APIs in the broker service for initiating and monitoring external and internal restore operations, performing rollforward operations, and listing available backup images.

⚡ What's New in IBM Db2 as a Service
This update includes standard security patches and stability improvements across the console and all supported software components, ensuring continued reliability, performance, and security of the platform.
New Feature Highlight:
A REST API has been introduced for Audit.
Upcoming Root CA Certificate Update
Effective October 15, 2026, Db2 SaaS will update its SSL certificate chain, replacing the DigiCert G1 Root CA with Let's Encrypt ISRG Root X1 as part of a planned security enhancement.
This update will not disrupt Db2 service. However, applications connecting via SSL (including JDBC, ODBC, and CLI) must ensure their trust stores and Db2 clients/drivers support the Let's Encrypt ISRG Root X1 certificate to prevent connection issues.
Customers are expected to complete all necessary preparations by August 7, 2026.

⚡ What's New in IBM Db2 Warehouse as a Service
Over the coming days, new generation plans on IBM Cloud and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be updated.

- Replication - IBM Cloud now supports replication. A new Replication tab has been added to the console UI, enabling users to configure and manage replication.

Audit - A new auditing enhancement introduces two custom stored procedures that allow users to configure audit logs in either binary or comma-delimited format.

Db2 engine - Introduces a new mod pack update to Db2 v12.1.4.

Platform fixes
- Fixed chargeback calculations for snapshot restores to ensure accurate billing.
- Increased the console allowlist entry limit beyond the previous maximum of 100 entries.
- Resolved a user interface issue affecting the display of backup listings in specific scenarios.
- Fixed a connection issue with the watsonx.data Iceberg Catalog.
- Resolved an issue involving a missing audit tablespace during migration from Audit v1 to Audit v3.
- Applied periodic security patches and updates.
