HI, an hmc was working fine when it stopped seeing power10. What should I check or is there any action I can take to regain the connection?

Maybe the HMC port on the P10 is still using DHCP and it's ip has changed. Confirm the IP using function 30 of the operator panel

You an also lookin ASMI for the connections to the HMC to verify if they are DHCP or static

My response was crafted with AI assistance, tailored to provide detailed and actionable guidance for your query.

The issue could be related to the IP address change if the HMC port on the Power10 server is still using DHCP.

    1. Verify the IP Address Using Function 30 of the Operator Panel

    • On the Power10 system, use the operator panel to check the current IP address of the Service Processor (BMC):
      • Access the Operator Panel on the front of the Power10 server.
      • Press F30 to display the network settings. This will show you the current IP address of the system's service processor (BMC).
      • If you see that it is using DHCP and the IP has changed, you will need to update the HMC connection to reflect this new address.

    2. Check the Network Configuration in ASMI

    • Log into ASMI (Advanced System Management Interface):

      • Open a web browser and go to the BMC's IP address (the one obtained from Function 30 of the operator panel, if DHCP is enabled).
      • Log in using the appropriate credentials.
    • Navigate to Network Settings:

      • In the ASMI interface, go to Network Configuration to check the current settings.
      • If the IP address is listed as dynamic (DHCP), it means the server's IP might have changed after a reboot or network refresh.
      • You can switch to static IP if you prefer fixed addressing for easier management:
        • Set the IP address manually under IP Configuration.
        • Ensure the DNS settings and Gateway are configured correctly for the network.

    3. Confirm Connection Settings Between the HMC and Power10

    • Verify HMC Configuration:
      • Log into the HMC and go to System Management > Manage Systems.
      • Check the status of the Power10 system in the HMC's managed systems list. If it shows as "Disconnected", verify the IP address configured on the HMC.
    • Update the HMC with the Correct IP:
      • If the Power10 server's IP has changed due to DHCP, update the HMC configuration to use the new IP.
      • On the HMC, go to the "Manage System" tab, select the affected Power10 system, and choose the option to edit the system connection. Input the new IP address if necessary.

    4. Check and Correct Any DHCP Conflicts or Leases

    • DHCP Lease Expiry:
      • If the Power10 server's service processor was using DHCP, the IP address lease may have expired, leading to an IP change.
      • You can check your DHCP server logs to confirm if the IP address for the service processor has been changed.
    • Reserve the IP:
      • To prevent future issues, configure your DHCP server to reserve the IP address for the Power10 system's BMC MAC address. This ensures that the same IP will always be assigned to the Power10's management port.

    5. Restart the HMC and Power10 Service Processor

    • Restart the HMC:

      • If the IP has been updated on the Power10, sometimes the HMC might still retain the old connection details. Restart the HMC services or the entire HMC system to refresh its network connections.
      • Use the following command to restart HMC services:
        bash
        hmcservice restart
    • Restart the Power10 Service Processor:

      • From ASMI, perform a soft reset of the service processor if you're still unable to establish a connection.
      • If necessary, reboot the entire Power10 system to ensure all settings are applied correctly.

    6. Check Firewall or Security Settings

    • If there are any firewalls or network security policies in place (either on the HMC or between the HMC and Power10), ensure that the necessary ports are open for communication.
    • The HMC to Power10 connection typically uses ports like 23 (Telnet), 80 (HTTP), or 443 (HTTPS) for management tasks, but specific ports can vary depending on your configuration.

    7. Set the Power10's Service Processor to Use Static IP (Optional)

If you prefer to avoid relying on DHCP in the future and want more stability with the IP configuration, follow these steps to set a static IP:

    • In ASMI, go to Network Settings.
    • Set the IP address to a fixed one instead of dynamic. This ensures that even after rebooting, the Power10 server's management processor will always use the same IP address.

    8. Verify DNS and Hostname Resolution (If Applicable)

    • If you use hostnames instead of IP addresses for HMC connections, verify that the DNS settings on both the Power10 and HMC are correct.
    • Ensure that DNS resolution works correctly and the HMC can resolve the Power10's hostname.

    Summary of Steps to Take:

    1. Check the current IP of the Power10 system using Function 30 on the operator panel.
    2. Verify the network settings via ASMI and confirm if DHCP is enabled.
    3. Update the HMC with the correct IP address of the Power10 system.
    4. Set the service processor to static IP (if preferred) to avoid future IP changes.
    5. Restart HMC and Power10 services to ensure the new settings take effect.
    6. Verify no DHCP conflicts or IP lease issues.

    • There is no 'F30' to press.
    • There is no "hmcservice"
    • Your AI-generated slop has no place here.

    Hello, Jose:

When the text says "Function 30" is not the keyboard function key, is the IBM POWER front Control Panel that has an LCD and some arrow and enter buttons. If you change the Function 01 N mode to Function 02 (change mode) to Manual, you can push arrow key to go to Function 30 and there you can see the exact IP address thje ASMI has active.

But I never heard about hmcservice command, in that you are right.

    Un saludo,

    Hello,

--> But I never heard about hmcservice command, in that you are right.
maybe a hmc cli command is meant here, but I don't know the command either.
Follow Command exsist to reboot HMC on CLI Interface.

hmcshutdown -t now -r  reboot the HMC (-t: timing in minutes, -r: reboot)

hmcservice is not a valid command ( as many have pointed out).
You can use the hmcshutdown command -
hmcshutdown -t now -r  reboot the HMC (-t: timing in minutes, -r: reboot)

This happened to a customer of mine the other day.  These are the steps I used to resolve the issue.

    • From the HMC CLI, I issued lssysconn -r all to see the current connections to the systems.  I noticed that one of them was no longer showing connected.  I made a note of the IP address that it was showing and I tried pinging that IP address with no success.
    • This customer has redundant HMC's so I was able to log into the other HMC and saw that the P10 was connected to that HMC.  I then launched the ASMI, logged in and checked the network settings for the HMC port and noticed that for some reason it had grabbed a different DHCP IP address from the HMC.
    • If you only have a single HMC, you can see what the IP address of the HMC port on your P10 is by using the front panel as Urtzi Larrieta notes below.
    • Once, you know what that IP address is, you can add the system through the HMC GUI, which I recommend or you can try adding it using the mksysconn command from the HMC CLI though this hasn't worked as well for me as using the GUI has.
