    ​Does anyone have a solution or input on how to speed up a reports output to Excel (with formatting)?
    We have a report that, at times, takes 12 hours!

    ​Hello,

    There are 2 options.  Run Excel and Run Excel Data.  I need the Run Excel option because I need the formatting applied to the Cognos report to be kept.

    Hi Jen,
    Does your report have a lot of extensive formatting and/or charts on it?  With charts, export to Excel will also include hidden tabs which contain the actual underlying data tables that populate those charts.  If there are a lot of them with lots of chart elements, these could be a bottleneck in you Excel processing, even though the visible outputs might not look like much. 
    If there are other unnecessary layout components that you could exclude from the Excel output, I will typically apply a conditional rendering that hides those objects when the output type is Excel.

    ​Can you give us some additional information for baseline and comparision? How long does it take to just run the report to HTML? How many rows are returned? How many formatting controls are in the spreadsheet? Honestly, I am not that good at Excel formatting, but if you download the report data to a csv, and then manually import the data into the Excel formatted spreadsheet, how long does that take? What are the time difference swings? You say "at times it takes 12 hours". What is the lowest, highest (I assume 12 hours) and on average? If these are widely different, what do you attribute the time differences to?
