I am looking to connect with women who are working in the AI field - I am a business strategist so connect AI areas to improve areas of the business. I would like to start a movement to get more women involved and even girls  in training areas. Please reach out if you share the same interest. Thanks

Hi Donna! Welcome to our group! Dont worry, most probably you will have a lot of opportunities to connect with AI women not only as team members but as AI Leaders.

Here at IBM we have a lot of AI women at Leaderships positions. Please take a look:

    https://www.ibm.com/watson/women-leaders-in-ai

    I hope you enjoy it.

    Hi Donna,

That sounds great! There are lots of patches of community out there, but it would be great if we could develop a way to connect here as well! @Christina Howell, is there a smart way to develop a space for this community?

Love this idea, everyone. There are a couple of different avenues that we can use within community to self-organize. What are the features of a separate space that you would like to take advantage of? What are some of the activities you'd like to coordinate in the community? One way in which we organize separate 'groups' and give them their own place to play, is by utilizing the User Groups feature on our platform.

Here's some information on User Groups (also sometimes referred to as Local Groups).

Since User Groups typically refer to a set of product users geolocated in specific regions, making in-person meetups and events possible, we could re-envision this as a potential space on community that suits a sub-group such as Women in AI.

Local groups have their own pages, where they can conduct discussions, post blogs and events, and other resources related to their topic area (example below).

Another option that @Kaila Timmons can give us some insight on is starting up a sub-group within the AI Learning group.

Do you have any feedback on this or other ways we can help get you organized into a sub-group? @Will Machin

Now we have a Strong Sponsor, ladies,

Gals, do you vote for a subgroup on AI group or a separate group? Please what is your stand on this?

I can be the moderator Cristina.

I Like the subgroup idea - can we make it AI Women Bay Area IBM Business Analytics user group - the whole point was to reach out to connect women working in AI . Men can join and participate but the objective is to support women - even educate those interested .

Hi All - I was offline the school winter break - I would like to start a Women in AI group in the Bay Area to collectively gather women working in AI or interested in working with Artificial Intelligence . My thought is to do a virtual forum as well to exchange ideas, maybe launch a training , network etc. Men are welcome but the objective to support the growth and enablement of women in AI.

    Thoughts???

    Hi Lauren,

I think its not clear until now whether Dona would like to connect with girls personally on her area in SF or whether she's seeking to connect on-line with gals around the world or both.

Maybe the first option wont be easy to be achieved here, but with the intention is to create a virtual IBM community oin this portal I think its a good start.

    And happy womans day haha

    Hello,

Thank you Donna! Now your goal is clearer for all of us

I said girls because you yourself mentioned it in your first post "even girls". And girls are the future women. The sonner they start coding the better for them. So why exclude them. Question to reflect!

Now if the group takes shape I have a name for it; since Donna (your name) means Woman in Italian, the group's name could be IBMs Donnas. Who is for it !? I am haha

I would like to participate remotely in your group, if that makes sense!
My specialities are "Trust and transparency in AI" / Governance in AI. By background I am an Enterprise Design Thinking and Agile Facilitator. My last project was on implementing cultural change which is also a prerequisite to implementing AI strategies successfully in enterprises. Currently I am working on concepts to promote our IBM policy lab to a broader audience.

Hi @Donna Bailey, so glad this is picking up momentum. I would love to schedule a call with you and any others to put a plan in place.

My inclination is to create a sub-group in the community to build up membership and engagement and plan/execute digital activities, while allowing local leaders such as yourself to organize in-person events for area members. The goal is that all activities could be shared in the group, allowing for further virtual engagement and discussion with all members.

I'd like to invite our community expert on user groups to help lead the discussion, as well as some of our community leaders who have experience running similar programs. Anyone else on the thread want to be added to an initial call to brainstorm?

@Kaila Timmons, @Allison Able, will connect with you on availability and get an invite out!

    Hi everybody,

It was great connecting with @Donna Bailey, @Lauren Thomas, and @Kaila Timmons to brainstorm this idea for a community Women in AI group! I know we've made some connections to other folks doing some really cool work in this area. I wanted to bring to your attention a larger Women in Data Science initiative that you all may be interested in checking out while we get our group and strategy in place!

Some of the members of our community have done a lot of work to support this effort, and can perhaps loop you into some opportunities to participate: @Trisha Mahoney, @Susan Malaika, @Kinga Szekessy Parrott, and @Rosie Pongracz. Thanks for sharing any information about WiDS that you can.

I also came across an article from @Mo McElaney, who recently hosted a virtual meetup for Womxn in Machine Learning and Data Science. There may be some nice connection opportunities there as well; click here to read Maureen's article on Medium.

How have your conversations been going? Look forward to connecting again shortly.

    Greetings fellow Comunity members.

Yesterday I had an amazing experience with Women Empowered Global, a non profit organization empowering women in bussines through education. Here is a Facebook review for the insightful webinar I attended yesterday. Generates hope to be witnessing this times and see you are all getting in place and paving the way for true change:

    " I feel deeply grateful.
I came here because as a man, I want women empowered, to work with them side by side or guided by, or guide, and because it's simply just about time they are recognized and given the chance to lead us. So my position at the begging was that of an observer, suporter.
What a gift and surprise I was given. Senela lays out in a simple and clear methodology, enlightening tips on real world issues that leaders face all across the world, all across causes and endeavours.  My deepest gratitude, admiration and unconditional support to your cause. Thanks from the heart."

IBM is full of educational resources, but if you want a more specific experiences I truly recommend WE webinars.

Wish all of us health, strength and compassion for this uncertain times!

    Hello!

I have a 15+ year history in international assistance and international security, heaped on top of a graduate degree (2007!!) that was steeped in statistics and econometric regression analysis. Advances in AI have reawakened (with great enthusiasm!) my love for quantitative methods--but I'm struggling to figure out which aspects of AI are most useful to dig into in order to competently help small businesses in my industry adopt new technologies that are most most salient to improving or expanding/adapting their key areas of performance.

I do know that within AI, ML is probably the most useful for my purposes, and I'm pretty sure that I don't need to become an expert in coding or engineering, but I need to know how much I do need to know about the math (I'm currently taking a crash course in math for ML and refreshing on statistics and linear algebra) and individual algorithms that enable a lot of the ML functions. Basically, I want to become well-suited to help small businesses that provide assistance overseas, or government agencies that aim to reduce the risk of violent conflict, better understand the populations that they are trying to influence and to better tailor their programs, messaging, monitoring, and evaluation to achieve their objectives. I'd also like to be well-suited to directly assist small businesses and organizations in less-served countries (especially Africa,Eastern Europe, and the Middle East) to find more success in assessing their opportunities in relevant markets and better design their business models or operational processes.  I'd like to be able to either/both guide these partners to leverage off-the-shelf tools or/and be a capable broker to represent the needs/challenges of these clients to developer teams that can create appropriate solutions.

Anybody else in the same boat? Or have any advice?

    Thanks!
    Erica

    In response to Erica Kaster:

Greetings. Congratulations on your iniciatives to help the most vulnerable. It's also my first priority in this moment.

Given your abilities and qualifications, my thoughts on your quest for knowledge and certification on AI different skills and technicl knowledge would be: team effort.

Being myself someone with non conventional skills, and given the fact that I am learning at the moment from a wide variety of sources and platforms, when it comes to designing and deploying specific solutions tailored to help and bring relief to people in vulnerable countries, I have found that putting together a great and diverse multidisciplinary team is by far the best first effort towards achieving results.

Focus on communicating your goals and motivate the right people here in the community and you will save valuable time and effort. With that I am not saying it's not worth it to learn anything you wish to, it's a unique time in that sense and availability of learning resources it's just overwhelming to say the least.

I for one, volunteer to work side by side to escalate the status of your ideas and projects.

    All the best

Greetings @Donna Bailey and all fellow community members.

I will share briefly something I am currently working on that might be of use for the purpose of this community.
This are paradoxical times in the sense that, we are experiencing a terrible and catastrophic event that is bringing suffering to far too many people. On the other hand, we are experiencing an acceleration in technology that is unprecedented. The opportunity now has never been rivalled in relation to making an impact at global scale to tackle humanities greatest challenges.
Last night, out of a LinkedIn post of an influential woman in the AI tech elite, a project has been born.  I just posted an idea because the woman leader posted an invitation to do so.  Twenty hours later, I have a team of 20 highly skilled computer scientists, behavioural scientist data scientists, engineers, robotic experts, all with amazing qualifications and relevant experience. The project is called Hope Bots, and we want to design and implement complex conversational chatbots that give meaningful advice and counselling to those less tech-savvy and not aware of AI 's potential.  I have to say that the majority of the volunteers are women. I am amazed and also at awe how women leaders with far more experience and success than me, have come up and supported me as a leader of this group. There is a lot to learn from this and as am important community you are for me, I will keep. you updated of all relevant work and research we do, The project will be open source and not for profit but with a sound financial strategy to secure infrastructure and the team's wellbeing.
