Good afternoon everyone!

I am approaching my next task at the university (Mathematics) and I would really appreciate your help.

I am considering branches/areas of maths that are being most commonly used by data scientists. I am not data scientist myself (yet?) but I am aware that there are many different opinions either proper mathematical background is considered necessary at all. Pardon my rather crude selection when it comes to mathematical areas, but that is the 'set' of skills that is being mentioned most often. Options are, as follows:

• FUNCTIONS, VARIABLES, EQUATIONS AND GRAPHS
• STATISTICS
• LINEAR ALGEBRA
• CALCULUS
• DISCREET MATH
• OPTIMISATION AND OPERATIONS/OPERATIONAL RESEARCH
• TRIGONOMETRY

If you've got spare second – I would really appreciate your help. Of course, any comments are more than welcome. What do you, personally find either most useful or fundamental?

The concept of Mathematics is very much important for the Course of Data Science. Without the knowledge of mathematics it is not possible to gain a frame on Data Science. The Above mentioned topic which you described are very much essential mathematics concept frequently used in Data Science. Statistic in very much important with regards to Data Science as we need the skills of statistics in every projects.
Some of the important must know mathematics concept used in Data Science are :
1. Linear Algebra ( Matrix and eigenvalues)
2. Calculus ( Derivatives and gradients)
3. Implementation of Neural network
4. probability
5. Statistics
If you have the knowledge of the above mentioned topics of mathematics then you can learn Data Science very well .

Hi Tomasz!

I believe that a basic understanding of all those fields is necessary, but in particular you should have a very profound knowledge in statistics. I would add probability theory somewhere on top to your list :-)

Good luck and have fun :-)

Hello World,

Learning is important for everyone, you can find thousands of resources online.

It is important to know the data source of the information, and to be a reference for all and easy to identify.

For example, MIT  has more than 2400 online resources for Students/Professors or Scientists distributed at different levels depending on your expertise.
