Having issues installing correctly SPSS 28 on a Apple M1 using Big Sur operating

    Hello fellow SPSS users,

All I am wondering if anyone is having this issue.   I have 2 Macs laptops on is a MacBook Pro with intel and a MacBook Air with Apple M), I have run both using SPSS 27 and both worked perfectly.  Then I upgraded to SPSS 28 after the lic expired.  My Older intel Mac works perfect and all teh menus are accessible but the New Mac "The MacBook Air" does not show all the menus.  For example all of the Basic menus like descriptive, frequency and cross tabs are missing but all the higher functions are present like regression, ANOVAs, custom cross tabs.  I really need to be able to have the Basics working especially the general crosstab functions.

I have tried to remove all older software as instructed by IBM when want to un-install software but even that does not seem to load in a complete SPSS application.

Does anyone one have any ideas how to solve this issue or at least is anyone using SPSS on a newer MacBook that has the new chip from Apple "M1" and you are able to perform the basics.  I can continue to use my older Mac but this is a pain and I am running out of ideas to fix the issue.  It is as though those simple menus just don't install.

    Thanks Ed

Hi. Open up a terminal window and try this:

    cd ~/Library/Preferences
    rm com.ibm.spss.plist
    killall -u {USER} cfprefsd

where {USER} is your username. If you don't know that, type

    whoami

on the command line to find out.

No restart / reinstall should be needed.

Please let us know what happens.

    Thanks!

Rick it appears your idea was unsuccessful in getting menu to load up after procedure and when I tried to execute the terminal it said the files were missing.   Let me know if you have any other ideas.

    Thanks

    Ed

Great news that procedure did work. Even though it says file was not there.  I did it twice and the second time it worked

Ed - I am having a similar problem that started when I upgraded from SPSS 27 to 28. My OS:  Big Sur 11.5.2.  Have you received any help or advice?

    Andrew

I am not sure this will work but the main expert on these topics is Rick.  I had a similar issue going from 26 to 27 but did not write down how I fixed it.  If I do fix the issue, I will post it on the forum now that I know it is not just me and my computer. My install shows that basic was installed and that all other higher levels were installed as well.  (see attachment)

I attached an example of what I am NOT seeing all the basic tools are gone and most importantly there is no option for Merging SPSS files and no cross tabs other than custom crosstabs.  Are you getting the same thing and are missing same menus.

Here is what I have done so far, you will need to do the same before you get to Rick steps I am assuming.

I have tried to do many things to remove the old files including any IBM files. Removed all prior version folder of SPSS 25, 26, 27, and all IBM folders in the home folder directory. See attached

    Here is what he said.

I just tried Ricks recommendation after I removed files and it indicates that files were all missing.  I would recommend you use his procedure prior to removing by hand all of the other files.

    Andrew,

Using the steps I outlined  (for removing old files) and using Rick's steps  (using terminal) below did fix the problem.  Thanks Ed
