  • 1.  Trouble with R on SPSS 27 (win)

    Posted Wed March 31, 2021 11:44 AM
I'm having trouble getting R to work with SPSS 27 (on windows). I've installed the STATS_R36_CONFIGURATION, made sure it points to the right directory for R and have the correct version of R (R3.6.0) installed. Still, when I try to run a script in SPSS i get the following:

    >Error # 6887. Command name: BEGIN PROGRAM
    >External program failed during initialization.
    >Execution of this command stops.
The spss package could not be loaded. Please make sure that Essentials for R has been successfully installed.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks, J-M Enelo

Do you get this for every R program?

    Can you run
    begin program r.
    print(sessionInfo())
    end program?

I've only tried with R3.6.0 and R3.6.3. Should I try with an older or newer version?

I get the same error message when i run the script in spss:
    >Error # 6887. Command name: begin program
    >External program failed during initialization.
    >Execution of this command stops.
The spss package could not be loaded. Please make sure that Essentials for R has been successfully installed.

R3.6.x is the only R version that works with Statistics V27.  It occurs to me that there may have been some issues with 27.0.0.0 in some configurations, so if you have  not installed the Fixpack for V27, I would suggest doing that.

Yes, STATS_R36 is the only extention I'm able to install in SPSS, and I cant set the directory for R3.5.

I'll try installing the fixpack, thank you for the suggestion

The Fixpack I could find didn't help. And installing 27.0.1.0 didnt work  (couldn't find Java during installation and wouldn't start after). So I ended up donwngrading to SPSS 26 and R 3.5. For some reason, the extension hub wont start now, but I solved it by installing STATS_R35 as a local extension bundle, and now "begin program r" replies properly.
