SPSS Statistics and Open Source - Better Together

By Sajan Kuttappa posted Wed February 23, 2022 12:26 AM

IBM hosted an insightful tech-talk where experts discussed the benefits of integrating popular open-source software tools like Python and R with SPSS Statistics. @Jon Peck and @Curtis Browning talked about how this integration provides SPSS Statistics users with easy access to a large set of open-source statistical libraries and functions. Users of open-source software packages gain the ability to distribute integrated R or Python packages to a wide range of users who may not be as familiar with open-source software tools.  They can handle large data sets from within SPSS Statistics and access powerful visualization tools.

Curtis opened the discussion with an  overview of R and Python in SPSS Statistics. He covered three main integration points: programmability, embedding R or Python code within syntax commands, and how to extend the product via modular program extensions.
Jon Peck discussed using extensions and illustrated this with a demonstration of the STATS TEXTANALYSIS extension command, which is designed for analysis of open-ended and "other" types of survey questions in combination with standard Statistics procedures.

Watch this on demand recording  of the webinar to dive deeper into these benefits with our experts.
