Event Recap: SF Python April 2019 Project Night

By Rashed Talukder posted Thu April 18, 2019 08:22 PM

This week IBM took part in sponsoring the local San Francisco Python meetup group for their April project night. Going to community events is always a great way to spend time away from work, to meet some new faces, see some familiar ones, and learn something new. Between taco bites from the taco bar, attendees participated in tutorials and group work. What a great way to start off the spring season!

Special Interest Group (SIG) Workshops

Each SF Python project meetup there are a few SIGs covering genomics, data science, and beginners to python. Attendees of these SIG’s take the opportunity to get help on their projects from their peers or work together on a predefined problem. That is exactly what a community is all about — people coming together to help each other succeed.

Hands-on Tutorial

The evening also included a tutorial session, where IBM’s very own Simon Plovyt and Karthik Muthuraman presented some of the amazing open source contributions they’ve worked on for IBM Model Asset eXchange (MAX). This was an interactive tutorial where participants were walked through how to automate creating accurate annotated descriptions of images in plain-english. We also walked though how to apply image filters and hashtags to these images using open source models.

At the end of the tutorial, participants had the outline to fully automate posts to social media outlets such as Instagram by simply uploading a picture and the RESTful service handling all the rest.

Should you go?

YES! Absolutely! If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, consider attending either the meetup group’s project or presentation nights – to suit whatever your interest. Regardless, if you are searching for a collaborative environment and high quality mentally stimulating conversations. We’re proud fans of Python here at IBM, we’re looking forward to seeing it grow, and we’re happy to continue contributing open source Python projects!
