  • 1.  Reading Mainframe Archives from Optim LUW

    Posted Thu October 15, 2020 05:20 PM
I have a customer that is using Optim to Archive its data.
Now I want to read and restore the Archived in a Distributed Environment using Optim LUW.
Can I copy the archived files from the mainframe and have Optim LUW read the archives without any type of conversion? What do I need to do to read the archives?

    Hi,

You can copy the files from the mainframe and then you have to register them in the distributed environment (under "Utilities").
You can then treat them like "standard" distributed archive files (via Browser or ODM).

The goal is to transfer the data from the DB2 in mainfrrame to DB2 LUW tables that have the same structure as the DB2 z/OS tables.
    • Is Optim Distributed able to read archive metadata and restore the tables using DB2 LUW tables as alternate location?
    • What about data conversion (EBCIDIC/ASCII, numeric formats, date/time,…)?

Just got additional information regarding this. Apparently the customer also has an archive of VSAM files.
Can I also use the VSAM archive files in LUW?

    Hi,

Never tried this as VSAM itself is not supported in distributed environment. But theoretically you should have access to the data and maybe you can import it into a newly created  table?

How can I recover or restore a Optim archive of VSAM files in LUW environment?
In mainframe, I can restore an archive to VSAM files, how can I do this in LUW environment, as they do not support VSAM?

    Hi,

Sorry, but I thought my message was clear. As VSAM is not supported you can not restore it.

    Regards,
    Fritz

I understand that. I cannot restore VSAM based mainframe files that were archived in Optim to LUW VSAM files, as they are not supported in LUW.
But supposedly the VSAM should be structured, and if I create DB2 tables with the same structure as VSAM files, I should be able to restore VSAM archives.
Does Optim archived files based on VSAM, support this? What happens to the VSAM metadata in Optim archives?
Can I generate the DDL commands in Optim, based on the VSAM metadata, to create the database tables in DB2?
