It's that time again to gather ideas for the Panel Discussion segment of our quarterly OVUG meeting coming up on July 28.

Please post ideas or questions as replies in this thread that you would like the Optim User Panel to discuss. This is your opportunity to have your questions addressed by multiple panel members whom have years of experience with the software.

Topics can be best practices, installing or upgrading Optim, how-to, etc., so let's get this conversation going!

Thank you for your participation and input.

*** If you are interested in participating as a Panel Member, please contact Marc Hebert.

Panel question posted by David Mogashoa:

"We are currently archiving our data to HCP storage which is on premises. I would like to know if Optim is capable to archive to Amazon S3 Glacier in the cloud."

    Keith,

    My two cents,

    Cloud, cloud, cloud,

    • Planned vendor support, if any,
    • Firsthand experience so far, if any,
    • Optim cloud roadmap, timeline, if any,
    • Did I mention cloud yet?

    Thanks,

I did not have the chance to address some of the questions posted in the chat. Hence my answers here:

    1. What is the performance hit from using this auditing? There is obviously no free lunch. Our performance measurements indicate a possible 5-7% CPU penalty when Data Masking Verification has been enabled.
    2. On 11.7, Why the OPTIM program name updated to FOP1170, which impacts the existing installed Jobs with the version name FOP1130. The Optim main program name has always been, and remains, FOPMAIN. You may be confusing the program name with the actual PLAN NAME used to access the application. The plan name is defined by the product installer. In your case, it seems the product installer decided to maintain two separate instances of the product, one for 11.3 and another one for 11.7, with separate code bases and plans. One could have chosen to retain existing plan name while selecting an upgrade path but that requires abandoning access to prior release. There is a lot of flexibility available and the choices are entirely up to the product installer.

    3. If there are known exclusion conditions, can we tell to new DMV ignore such instances ? For example, column has conditional masking where only set of values in a column are required to be masked. Unfortunately, there is no such degree of control. Optim will by design ignore values which are NULLs, all blanks or zero-length. Other than that, it is a pure comparison with some extras like adjustments for value precision or padding of values with non-equal length. The user may chose the option to let rows with DMV exceptions to be passed through. Or they would have to add their own logic with a column map procedure to determine the masking validity, without involving DMV. We can think about adding some bells and whistles.
