Bringing automation and intelligence to data catalogs

Offering Manager, IBM InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog, IBM

Organizations use only a small percentage of the vast amount of data they generate. To drive insights and outcomes at scale, many are building data science teams and enabling knowledge workers with access to data. But these teams can take advantage of data only when they know what the data is about. That's where the artificial intelligence-powered data catalog comes in.

AI is helping simplify and change the approach to seemingly every traditional IT product category and data catalogs are no different. This unique technology works alongside databases to help users easily identify and understand their data sources for analysis, management and governance.

They enable organizations to disseminate trusted, meaningful and quality information to users in a collaborative and secure environment. As such, the data catalog is well-positioned to be advanced by AI.

Continually, we are more dependent upon, and even expecting, machines to make recommendations and augment our decision-making, relying on a top-down rationalization influenced by human behavior and thought processes. Applying such behaviors to our organizational and informational structures is not only natural, it is also needed to cope with the vast amount of information available and necessary to the process of making intelligent and guided decisions.

AI is further proving to be a necessity for extracting useful insights from information. The increase in the volume of information, along with its diversity and complexity, creates impediments for its manual discovery, identification, organization or application or regulation.

That's why we believe that infusing AI into the data catalog is increasingly critical.
