Having trouble connecting Optim LUW to mainframe DB2 tables

Does this require Federated server? It looks as though you should be able to connect to mainframe DB2 via ODBC like connecting to SQL Server database, but it's not going easily.  Any tips?
    Thanks!

    Hello Dave,

Do you have DB2 connect installed on your workstation and server before trying to connect to ?

Also, can you attach any screenshot and PR0CNFG trace files for me to review and guide Thanks,
    Vishwas

    Hi,
We are trying to connect DB2 using ODBC connection for Optim distributed.
We still did not reach the Optim configuration so sending PR0CNFG logs will not be useful.
Also, we do not have DB2 Connect installed.
We are trying to create DB2 connection using ODBC and getting this error in ODBC-32 bit connection:
SQL30081N : a communication error has been detected.

    Thanks
    Shilpi

    Hello Shilpi,

Are you able to connect to the mainframe with the ODBC connection outside of Optim?

Also most of the cases or in my experience we have always gone to Mainframe with DB2 connect not with ODBC connection. No harm in trying out a new way to connect Optim with Mainframe.

    Hi Vishwas,

Are you able to connect to the mainframe with the ODBC connection outside of Optim?  - NO.
We are not able to connect to mainframe with ODBC connection.

So the other case you are saying is installing Db2Connect to connect to mainframe. We do not have this software on our Optim distributed servers. It might take longer to get the software installed on the server.

    Thanks
    Shilpi

    Hello Shilpi,

When you are not able to connect to Mainframe using ODBC outside of Optim then how can Optim connect.

I think first you need to fix the ODBC connection issue and make it work before using Optim. If you still have issues in connecting to ODBC connection to Mainframe, you might have to reach out to DB2 support and see if they can help you.

My sincere recommendation is to get DB2connect installed on one of the workstations and use it with Optim, I am sure it will work.

We were trying to fix the ODBC connection and were not connecting with Optim.
We were looking for help on ODBC connection.

Will try to get DB2connect also installed.

Now our ODBC connection is working - some parameters being supplied were incorrect.
We will try to use this in Optim now and let you know if we need help.

    Thanks for quick response.

    Thanks
    Shilpi

Were you ever able to get this to work? I ask because we have a similar need a to connect Optim LUW to DB2 z/OS. We have IBM Data Server ODBC driver 'ibmdbcl1' (DB2CLI.dll) installed and configured which will connect to DB2 z/OS when you test the ODBC connection itself. However, Optim config program is choking on this when trying to define the DB Alias and throwing errors saying the connection can't be found. I've tried various parameters with and without IDs and Passwords and they all throw the same error related to modules PN0CSSD8 and PNVCSSD8

I'm guessing this is tied back to us just having the wrong syntax or parameters in our connection or DSN. I looked in the online documentation for some guidance and found very little that was helpful. Is there documentation or examples of anyone using this DB2 ODBC driver with Optim LUW to define DB Alias to DB2 z/OS?  We do not have DB2 Connect, so we'd need to make this work using the ODBC driver. Thanks in advance for the help.

    Keith,

The license for the Federated Server is included with the Optim Archive bundle, I would not use the ODBC connection because it is so slow, I would set it up as a federated connection.

You can open a case with IBM and have them help you configure the connection and set up the federated objects.

    Hope this helps.
