Hi Robert,
Implementing those settings is definitely worth doing.
I discuss them in my blog series about those parameters:

Explaining the importance of key elements in Maximo's Best Practices for system performance guide (#explainBestPractices)
I have investigated a number of crash dumps and I teach crash dump analysis.
I will reach out to you privately with some advice on what to look for.

Subject: Tweaking Java Engine Parameters
We've been having repeated crashes of the Maximo Java engine. Spelunking the dump files seems to indicate one or more runaway threads, but there isn't enough consistency to track down the cause. Our tech consultant has recommended tweaking the JVM startup parameters and provided this link https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/sites/default/files/inline-files/$FILE/Maximo%20Best%20Practices%20for%20System%20Performance%207.6.x_0.pdf
My question is: has anyone had any experience with crashes and/or this kind of tweaking? If so, what was your process? Thanks.
