IBM Champion Spotlight: Steven Perva

IBM Champion @Steven Perva

This week, meet IBM Champion Steven Perva. He's Senior Mainframe Innovation Engineer at Ensono and contributes to the IBM Z and LinuxONE and Security technology areas. His favorite IBM product is IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Python, because "it changed everything about how I use z/OS! (Can we honorably mention IBM Z Open Automation Utilities because they belong together!)".

Steven has been an IBM Champion for 2 years and his favorite type of advocacy to perform is speaking. He says, "I am a huge fan of speaking. The thrill of being anxious I’ll make a fool of myself and having a great time in front of a group of folks is a gift and a curse." He tries to create content that he would love to experience as a listener or viewer. Steven is driven to contribute because of the larger (cool and fun) culture around mainframe technology. As Steven says, "I’ve always viewed technology as this catalyst to [have] fun and have wanted everyone to experience that feeling, so I share inspiration and excitement with others."

One thing Steven is proud of is the legacy of curiosity that he gets from his dad and then shares with other technologists to build something larger than himself. Steven tells us,"I recently spoke at Dell Technologies World about the power of the modern mainframe and being at that venue with so many technologists talking about something I’m passionate about really gave me this sense of accomplishment I haven’t had yet. My dad really inspired me to be a technologist because he took a loan out as an adult to buy his first computer and had this overwhelming curiosity about technology. All my life he and I shared cool things from making levels on video games to building text-based adventure games in C and C++. While my father works in IT now, I know that he is able to hear about me doing the things I do as a Champion and know that because he was able to incite that curiosity in me, I’m hopefully out sharing that with the world. I’m proud to be a part of that legacy and seeing others identify me as an inspiration really makes me think, “Wow, I am building something much larger than myself.”

If Steven didn't work in technology, he would probably be in construction or remodeling. "I love building things," he says, "and when I’m not working on tech I’m doing woodworking or remodeling work because it scratches that itch for me and gets me away from the screen.'
