evolutions, obsolescences, update cycles and product names

  • 1.  evolutions, obsolescences, update cycles and product names

    Hello,

I'm a bit lost in the maze of announcements about evolutions, obsolescences, update cycles and product names.

I see that there are two types of Planning Analytics:
     - version 2.0.x (on premise, SaasCloud)
    - version 2.1.x (on premice, aws, ...)

is there a comparison between the two, in terms of :
     - local installation (setup? Container?)
    -  existence of tm1Web (for how long, until when?)
    -  existence of Perspective, Architect, PerformanceModeler (for how long)?

Because, for new projects with new customers, we'll always be able to get by; but to migrate existing, tried-and-tested, reliable applications, with numerous happy users, that's likely to be a different kettle of fish.

    Regards,
    Philippe

    Hi Philippe,

Yes, there is allot of new development.

    Version 2.x (or v11)

    • Version 2.0 and 2.1 both available for on premise deployment. They are part of the same "development track", where 2.1 discontinues support for the old API, and thereby legacy clients, such as Architect and Perspectives.
    •  PA on Cloud is similar to the version 2.x track.

    PA Engine (or v12)

    • PA engine is a complete "rebuild" of the TM1 Server. It is now container based.
    • This version have newer supported the legacy clients, as was delivered within the last years
    • PA Engine (v12) is currently only available on AWS, and also called "PA aaS"

    Hello Emil,

Almost totally aligned with you expect that for the PA Engine (V12) I've heard in a AMA that IBM will deliver a "classic On Premise" version of it.

    Hi Robert,

I "heard" the same, so I personally now understand this as a given fact.

    I "heard" the same...

Was some time ago during a IBM webinar, but if I remember correctly and don't hallucinate there was a "3" in the version name... so something like 2.3 or 3.1?

    Only time will tell...

    Like Bob, almost totally aligned, couple of things;

PA 2.0 and 2.1 both come with the EXACT SAME version of TM1, the v11 stream, there is no deprecation of any APIs, PA 2.1 simply doesn't package the legacy clients any longer, TM1 is still TM1;-!

And the 'TM1 is still TM1' also applies to TM1 v12, the core engine is still the same, but more importantly, there is nothing that requires it to run in a containerized environment. Now it has indeed been rearchitected to take advantage of such environment if it does run there, and it adds high availability that's not available if you don't, but it is also still perfectly happy to run natively on Linux, and yes also Windows, as well.

That said, currently TM1 v12 is indeed only available on PAaas on AWS AND Cloudpak for Data (CPD)!, but there might be some truth in those rumors as well ;-)

    Hi Hubert ,

    Now I'm completely lost again!

I thought that after April 2025, only version 2.1.x would be alive and maintained, and that this version would not include the client legacies (Architect, Perspective), which would no longer work because the old APIs would no longer be activated.

From what I understand from the last post, Architect and Perspective could continue to work with 2.1 after May 2025, simply because they wouldn't be included in the installation setup ????

    Kind regards,
    Philippe

    Hello Philippe,

You're thinking life is easy ???

More seriously, with the installed base of legacy version of TM1 I can't imagine at all that someone could come and say it's 2.1.x or nothing...

Now, for new players, IMHO, you'll have no other choice than to go 2.1.x as it will be the only available.

I do love a lot the conclusion of Hubert's answer :

"That said, currently TM1 v12 is indeed only available on PAaas on AWS AND Cloudpak for Data (CPD)!, but there might be some truth in those rumors as well ;-)"

    Hi Philippe,

Had no intention to confuse you, realize it is hard enough as it is.

Just think about it this way, the version of TM1 used by/packaged with Planning Analytics, is not changing between PA 2.0 and 2.1. They only thing that is changing is that those legacy clients are no longer supported effectively after April 2025.

We would never be able to stop the usage of the old API in v11 as that would break people using TM1RunTI and anything else written against the old APIs that people depend upon, and often call from within TIs using ExecuteCommand for example, as well. TM1Top would stop working too, albeit there is the top log alternative, and I'm probably forgetting a bunch of things that depend on it as well. This is at the same time, IMHO, the single biggest hurdle for people to migrate to v12 as all those things we don't have direct insight into and can't really help you migrate (but there are things that might help smoothen the path like my tm1-executecommand-service, but that's for a later day.

So, YES, if you have an installation of Perspectives or Architect those will continue to work with the TM1 v11 server that comes packaged with PA 2.1, but you'd be no longer supported.

    Did I find you again;-?
